These fine folks are members of our multi-organization team, installing 31 different solar / battery / EV charging projects across Bayfield County, Wisconsin, and the lands of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, right on the shores of Lake Superior. 💚💚💚 They are standing in front of one of our muGrid battery-integrated microgrid projects at the main County Highway Garage to support their highway department fleet electrification goals.

Maria Redmund, Director of the Wisconsin Office of Sustainability and Clean Energy joined the Bayfield County energy team touring the Highway Garage in Washburn. The solar and microgrid system helps ensure power during outages.

The propane water heater at our muGrid Analytics microgrid test lab recently died after a 12-year life (pilot wouldn't stay lit). We took the opportunity to swap it for an electric tank water heater, even though that meant running new wiring. Why?

We are on a time-of-use electric rate with 28 cent / kwh electricity from 4-8pm and 8 cent electricity all other hours. (and a $5 / kw demand charge from 4-8pm.) With the addition of a smart switch, our Redcloud Energy Management System is able to control the water heater so that it only heats during off-peak hours. That lets us heat our water with 8 cent electricity, and then rely on 50-gallons of thermal storage to get us through the expensive late-afternoon period.

We estimate the savings of switching from heating water with $2.25 / gallon propane to 8 cent electricity at about $130 per year. That makes the payback period for the swap about 5 years, including the new wiring.

As the moon passed in front of the sun in Bayfield County, WI, not only did our Redcloud EMS record the energy story, but it is also actively peak shaving using the BESS. Solar decreased and Redcloud EMS instructed the battery to step up, keeping the peak demand constant!

muGrid Analytics will serve as Lead Program Manager for the Wisconsin Office of Sustainability and Clean Energy’s (OSCE) Resilience and Prosperity in Rural Northern Wisconsin program, which has been selected for award negotiation for the Energy Improvement in Rural or Remote Areas Funding Opportunity provided by the U.S. Department of Energy. The program is one of 17 projects selected for award negotiations across 20 states and 30 tribal nations.
