Leesburg Police Department Institutes Temporary Changes in Response to COVID-19 – March 30, 2020 Update

Leesburg, VA – The Leesburg Police Department takes the health and safety of our officers and our community very seriously.

It has been brought to our attention that the Department of Motor Vehicles’ below detailed guidance concerning driver’s licenses, identification cards, and vehicle registrations does not include provisions for uninspected motor vehicles or for vehicles with expired inspections. Due to the ongoing spread of COVID-19, the Leesburg Police Department will be enacting the following additional safety precaution in order to support social distancing:

In addition to the below detailed guidance, that was enacted by Governor Northam and forwarded by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, the Leesburg Police Department will be expanding this directive to apply the 60-day extension to also include Virginia safety inspection stickers that expire during the months of March 2020 and April 2020. Therefore, enforcement by members of the Leesburg Police Department of both vehicle registrations and safety inspections are anticipated to resume respectively on June 1, 2020 and July 1, 2020.

Earlier this month, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles released the following changes to encourage social distancing and to discourage public gatherings:

“Effective March 18, 2020, all 75 DMV customer service centers are closed and all mobile services postponed until April 2, 2020 in response to the continued spread of novel coronavirus, or COVID-19.

To minimize customer inconvenience, DMV at the direction of Virginia Governor Ralph Northam, is extending the validity of driver’s licenses, identification cards, vehicle registrations, and escort vehicle driver certificates for 60 days. This includes individuals aged 75 and older who are typically required to make an in-person visit.

Customers whose driver’s license or identification card expires on or before May 15 will have an additional 60 days to renew their credential. However, those Virginians eligible to renew online or by mail are encouraged to take advantage of those services.

Vehicle registrations that expire in March and April should be renewed online or by mail. Replacement titles can be obtained online and original title transactions can be conducted by mail. If in-person service is needed, these customers will have an additional 60 days to renew credentials without a late fee. During the office closures, DMV will continue to process the transactions that come in through mail and the website, dmvNOW.com.

DMV is encouraging its employees and customers to follow the recommendations of the CDC and the Virginia Department of Health in regards to personal health and social distancing.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

Chief Gregory Brown would like the public to know that the Leesburg Police Department takes public health and safety extremely seriously, which is why we continue to make changes to how we operate during these times.

The Loudoun County Health Department is the primary agency responsible for local response to a public health concern, including the evolving coronavirus outbreak. Leesburg Police Department Institutes Temporary Changes in Response to Coronavirus

Leesburg, VA – Yesterday afternoon, Loudoun’s First Responders briefed the community on measures implemented in light of the evolving Coronavirus situation. Deputy Chief of Police Vanessa Grigsby, Loudoun County Sheriff's Office Sheriff Mike Chapman, Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Chief Keith Johnson, Purcellville Police Department Chief Cynthia McAlister and Middleburg Police Department Chief A.J. Panebianco addressed the community at the joint press conference, which can be viewed at https://bit.ly/39ZTvG4.

The Leesburg Police Department takes the health and safety of our officers and our community very seriously. For this reason, you may notice changes in the way our officers respond to calls for service. You may also notice an adjustment in the availability of some services that are normally offered to the community. Due to the ongoing spread of Coronavirus, we have instituted the following changes effective immediately. While these changes are temporary, they are in effect until further notice. Many of these changes are consistent with the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) guidance for Law Enforcement professionals.

Safety Measures and Temporary Changes in Officer Response to Calls for Service:
• Our officers have been directed to use social distancing to avoid unnecessary physical contact with non-arrestees. This may include not shaking hands with members of the public and/or remaining at a distance of six feet when possible.
• You may notice our officers wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including but not limited to, rubber gloves and/or facemasks if physical contact is deemed necessary.
• Our officers have been directed to routinely wash their hands with soap and water, or if in the field to use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
• Our officers have been issued sanitizing spray and wipes for their cruisers, equipment, and gear.
• We have increased cleaning and sanitizing of commonly touched surfaces in our station.
• We will take police reports over the phone, rather than in person, whenever possible.

Temporary Adjustment of Services:
• All tours of the police station, cruisers, and other equipment have been suspended.
• The Leesburg Police Department Ride-Along program has been suspended.
• We are unable to accept food donations at our police station at this time.
• Most police department public events, such as Coffee with a Cop, have been tentatively suspended.
• The Chat with the Chief event on March 31, 2020 at 6:30 PM will tentatively be hosted on Facebook Live at https://www.facebook.com/LeesburgVAPolice/, rather than in a public setting.

Potential Future Temporary Adjustment of Services:
• All tours that involve an officer traveling to another location, such as a daycare or house of worship, may be suspended.
• Fingerprinting and car seat inspection services offered to the general public may be suspended. Our officers will utilize protective gear when performing these services in an abundance of caution.
• The use of the Leesburg Police Department’s Community Room by public groups may be suspended.

Chief Gregory Brown would like the public to know that while we understand that these temporary changes may affect the level of service that you have come to know an expect, we believe that they are necessary to protect our officers and our community. We will continue to work with our local, state, and federal partners during this time to ensure that public safety remains our #1 priority.

We kindly ask that members of the public follow the advice of healthcare professionals. If you are sick or exhibiting symptoms, please do not come to our station for routine services. We ask that you instead reach out to us via our Dispatch at 703-771-4500, by email, or via the internet.

Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Maryland

For Immediate Release:

The Maryland Prince Hall Masons mourn the untimely passing of our Brother, Congressman Elijah E. Cummings. Congressman Cummings established himself as a champion for social justice, healthcare reform, and drug policy as he served as President of the Congressional Black Caucus and Chair of the Committee on Oversight and Reform among numerous other positions of influence. Congressman Cummings truly embodied the masonic principles of service to God, community, and family and he will be sorely missed. May his legacy of service survive and thrive in our memories. May we also use his personal example of selfless service to continue as he would in the great fight for equality in our communities.

Rest in power, faithful servant and champion of the people!
