This past winter was an unusual one up here in the Yaak.

Snowpack at lower and mid-elevations was light, the kind of news that makes anglers nervous heading into summer. But the Kootenai basin received tremendous moisture overall.

Heavy rains through December and deep into April kept the high country well supplied and the river healthy through the transition.

The result is a river in fantastic shape for the season. Flows are expected to level off around 10,000 cfs through July, August, and September, perfect conditions for both wading and floating.

Not every river in Montana can say that right now. The Kootenai can.

None of this happens without people paying close attention. A sincere thank you to Greg Hoffman, biologist at Libby Dam, for keeping a keen eye on every detail surrounding this river and for having a hand in how flows are managed. His work matters and we don't take it for granted.
