CASTING NOTICE

Potted Potter
The Unauthorized Harry Experience: A Parody by Dan and Jeff

We are casting two actors to perform in the Bally’s Las Vegas residency of the international hit family comedy POTTED POTTER, in which the story of all seven Harry Potter books is told in just seventy madcap minutes.

Since 2006, the show has toured all around the world. This is an exciting opportunity to join POTTED POTTER as its “Best Of Las Vegas” award-winning residency extends and we move from the show being performed by a touring cast from the UK, to a resident cast to appear in the 275-seat Magic Attic within Bally's Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip.

Both roles require strong comedy skills, and a willingness to interact with and improvise around each audience. The two performers will also need to play off each successfully as a double act. The show is loud and energetic in style, with endless costume changes, dozens of props, and plenty of fun.

Dates
Rehearsals will commence in Las Vegas on December 9, 2019.
These non- AEA contracts will run until May 3, 2020 with scope for renewal.

Fee
$900 per week (regular performance schedule is 9 per week, Thursdays dark)
Performers will be responsible for their own travel and lodging throughout.

Casting
Following self-tape and Skype casting with the UK-based creative team, selected performers will be invited to attend callbacks in Las Vegas on November 1 or 2.

Roles

Dan
Playing age 20s/30s – BRITISH ACCENT TO NATIVE STANDARD ESSENTIAL

Dan plays the fool throughout the show, but somehow seems to be one step ahead of Jeff at the same time. Although his job is to play all the characters except Harry Potter, he hasn’t read any of the books and sometimes his lack of Potter knowledge threaten to scupper the show altogether.

This ideal performer for this role will be physically agile and will have plenty of energy to whip up the audience and keep the show flowing at a rapid-fire pace. Clown training in the John Wright / Angela de Castro / Phillipe Gaulier style would be useful, but is not essential. Basic singing ability is needed for the finale number.

Jeff
Playing age 20s/30s – BRITISH ACCENT TO NATIVE STANDARD ESSENTIAL

Jeff is the ‘straight man’ of the double act, and the self-professed Harry Potter expert of the piece, who is determined that everything will follow his exacting standards of how a good story is told. He is constantly frustrated with Dan’s lack of preparation for the task ahead, especially when this leads to him being the butt of a joke. Basic singing ability is needed for the finale number.

I hope you all had a fabulous time at the garden party on Saturday! What a gorgeous location it was befitting. Our guest of honour Ms Saffron Burrows stoked the flame and passion of actor-vism with a rousing and provocative speech. She agreed to share it....in case you were not in attendance on Saturday!

Equity in LA Sept 28th 2019
Thank you all for being here to celebrate the presence of British Equity in the US.
In December 1929 a group of actors came together at the Duke of York’s theatre.
Inspired by their brothers and sisters on Broadway they resolved to form the first UK actor’s union.
90 years later Equity is flourishing.
In a rare exception to the dwindling numbers of many other unions - Equity’s membership has actually risen in the last ten years.
The average age of member being 27.
And Equity has always had women make up more than half the membership.
I grew up raised by trade union parents. They were teachers and I thought the annual NUT conference in Blackpool, Scarborough or Brighton was just heaven.
I had an unusual love for conference business. So at 11 and 12 I sat in the observers gallery watching motions being debated and argued for. I had the proud pleasure of seeing my mum make a powerful speech against clause 28, rushing from the creche where she’d been nursing my brother, to argue for a boycott of the homophobic clause. And receiving a standing ovation.
My mum taught for 45 years in Hackney. And always taught every kid, from four upwards, that racism, sexism
and homophobia were not how humans should be, and how to challenge those things.
I grew up believing in the power of unions. And the need for them.
And also having a rather train-spottery penchant for the language of “seconding” and “amendments” and “addendums”. But more crucially I saw the effects of a union on a workplace.
A few years ago Equity contacted me about a film I’d made outside of England that was being mis interpreted – the union was certain of this – by the inland revenue. They told me:
”We’re going to court on your behalf. It will be a test case.” I was amazed and impressed. The union won the case. All of this done with dexterity and determination. And without me even asking.
So here we are in 2019.
Matt from Equity asked me to say a few words today.
And I found myself thinking: what’s urgent. What needs to be addressed.
The union has been taking action since 2017 on safety from harassment - and specifically sexual harassment
- and bullying in the workplace. We still have miles to go before we can sleep on that subject. But bravo.
Pay and conditions still need improving, yes, absolutely.
But what really, really needs to be addressed and radically challenged if we could believe in “six impossible things

before breakfast.” And it is clearly the decimation of the world we live in.
I, like all of us, find myself very moved by Greta Thunberg and the movement of young people who are actually living life with the correct degree of urgency.
Dealing with this issue of climate change with the crucial sense of there not being a moment to lose.
Greta Thunberg said, "This is a crisis. We have to act like our house is on fire, because it is.”
Naomi Klein’s new book “On fire: The Burning Case for the Green New Deal” illustrates how little time there is to act. And the case for a New Deal echoing FDR’s New Deal of the 30’s, the Green New Deal tackles the twin crises of inequality and climate change.
It supports worker’s rights, improved conditions, all the things Equity fights for, in addition to overhauling infrastructures that are wrecking our planet.
Inspired by Greta, the student strikers and Naomi Klein, Activist and Actor Jane Fonda has moved to Washington, D.C. for the next four months to focus on climate change.
I will be going to Washington to join this fight. I hope to get there in November.
The aim is to lobby at weekly “Fire-Drill Friday” protests – outside the White House - an action employed during the Anti-Apartheid years - for the Green New Deal, and build a strong enough presence to actually bring about change.

I urge you all to join me, and if you can’t travel – Jane did say I should invite the whole room – then: speak about this, share it with friends, make the most of the platform that sometimes us performers are offered, in interviews, and on social media, to bring about change.
Speaking of change, Equity members can currently vote on changing rule 3, which would allow us to take a far stronger stance on climate change.
I salute you all for being in the union. Have some lovely scones.
And let’s do six impossible things before breakfast.
