Egypt 🐫 Blissful Blog : Abu Simbel

Carved into the mountainside over 3,000 years ago, the massive temples of Abu Simbel were built by Ramses II to showcase the power of ancient Egypt. Inside, the walls are covered floor to ceiling with carvings and battle scenes that still tell stories thousands of years later.

Ramses II, who definitely did not suffer from low self esteem, even built a second temple for his beloved wife Nefertari... although most of the statues still feature him.

Many of the carved faces throughout Egypt were later damaged by religious vandals attempting to erase the beliefs and rulers of the past. Ironically, the monuments were so massive and difficult to destroy that many were left unfinished as beliefs and political agendas changed over time.

In one of the greatest preservation projects in history, the entire Abu Simbel temple complex was carefully cut into giant sections and relocated to higher ground in the 1960s to save it from flooding after the construction of the Aswan High Dam. 🇪🇬
