Don’t miss Jasper on Your Ozark Getaway
Just twenty minutes south of the Buffalo River Basin Cottage on scenic Arkansas Highway 7 sits the small town of Jasper, Arkansas. With about 550 residents in town and thousands of visitors passing through each year, Jasper is the quiet gateway to the heart of the Ozarks.
Many adventure seekers come to float the Buffalo National River Upper Section, known for its towering bluffs, waterfalls, hiking trails, and some of the most scenic water in America. Others come to unplug in cabin rentals tucked into the hills, where the views and sunsets do most of the talking.
Jasper itself sits along the Little Buffalo River and serves as Newton County’s historic county seat, anchored by a courthouse in the center of the square.
Right across the street is the beloved Ozark Cafe, open since 1909 and one of the oldest restaurants in Arkansas. It’s the kind of place where breakfast is serious business—huge pancakes, biscuits and gravy, grits, bacon and coffee served with welcoming smiles and constant coffee refills.
A few steps away, Jasper Pizza Company brings a newer flavor to the square with scratch-made pizza, a cozy wood stove in winter, and Arkansas-style cheese dip worth remembering. I have bought it to take home to use to make macaroni! Yum.
For coffee lovers, Peggy Sue’s Coffee offers a downtown stop with locally roasted blends and classic café treats.
Low Gap Cafe, just up the street, is a favorite for what Arkansas Times called a chef-driven “backroad gourmet” meal restaurant—slightly pricier, but widely loved for lunch or dinner.
On the square you’ll also find Bubba’s Buffalo River Store, filled with tees, books, candles, and other souvenirs that can be purchased so you can take home a little piece of the Ozark spirit you find here.
This is just a snippet of what the small-town has to offer. There are more shops and food options, including food trucks to check out. Beyond it all, Jasper keeps its charm alive with farmers markets, seasonal events, and a courthouse square that still feels like the center of community life.
The real magic, though, is what surrounds it in every direction. From Jasper, you can head east to connect with outfitters to rent a canoe or kayak to float the Buffalo National River, to elk in Boxley Valley, north to swimming holes at Ozark Campground or Pruitt Landing, west to quiet fishing holes, or south toward waterfalls and canyon views.
Jasper is not a place you rush through. It’s a place you pause—grab a meal, groceries, browse the square, and let the Ozarks slow you down for a bit.
