Meet the Song Sparrow!

One of the Deschutes River corridor's most familiar birds, the Song Sparrow is often heard long before it's seen. Its cheerful, varied song echoes through the willows and brush along the river, while its streaked feathers provide excellent camouflage among the branches.

Keep an ear out during your next walk around Imperial River Company, you might hear one singing from a nearby perch before you ever spot it.

Meet one of the Deschutes Canyon's fastest residents: the Yellow-bellied Racer.

This sleek, nonvenomous snake is known for its incredible speed and sharp eyesight. Rather than relying on camouflage alone, Yellow-bellied Racers are quick to slip away when they sense movement, making sightings a special treat.

They're an important part of the local ecosystem, helping control rodent and insect populations while thriving in the warm, rocky landscapes around Maupin.

If you come across one during your adventures, give it a little space and enjoy the moment. Encounters like this are a reminder that the Deschutes River canyon is home to an incredible variety of native wildlife.
