🦆 A Day for the Original Duckmaster🦆

Today, August 26, we’re celebrating Edward Pembroke Day—officially proclaimed by the City of Memphis in 1994.

But who was Edward Pembroke? He was the original Peabody Duckmaster and the man responsible for turning "a few ducks" into one of Memphis’ most iconic traditions.

When Mr. Pembroke arrived at The Peabody Memphis in 1940, he had previously worked as an exotic animal trainer with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. He personally trained them the "Peabody Duck March" and to walk down a red carpet to John Philip Sousa’s “King Cotton March.”

Mr. Pembroke served as Duckmaster for an incredible 50+ years, making his mark on The Peabody, Memphis and generations of duck lovers along the way.

Today, we tip our hats—and maybe a few feathers—to the man who started it all.

*Plot Twist* The Peabody Ducks were never supposed to stay. What started in 1933 as the ultimate prank - played by General Manager Frank Schutt - turned into one of Memphis’ most unique traditions.

More than 90 years later, our feathered celebrities are still taking a daily dip in the Grand Lobby fountain.

It's safe to say, this prank really took flight. 🦆
