Well, new world screw worm is here. We will be diligent with fly control and inspection of the donkey and cattle herds on the property. Co-Ral dust, spray, and pine tar applied to any open wounds here is the plan. We will also be visiting with the vet Monday to determine best injectable treatments since we are scheduled to be away for a trip soon for a bit.

The important thing is to lay eyes on all animals as often as possible. Screw worms are treatable if caught early enough.

Also, many have asked why so many donkeys. We lease grass for grazing to Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue. They are a great organization to work with, and the donkey lease and subsequent Airbnb guests that come to visit them have helped supplement other improvements on this place. We currently have 44 head and have had as many as 115, depending on grass availability. We have finally found our sweet spot with cattle, donkeys, and wildlife management. Well, New World Screw Worm is officially here in Texas. 🙁. Things are about to about to get real at The Chaos as we step up our prevention efforts in the herd. We need ALL Texans to be diligent in checking livestock, wildlife, and pets. Even a tiny pinprick wound is enough for a female fly to lay her eggs in. It is critical to report suspected cases immediately to Texas Animal Health Commission and/or Texas Parks and Wildlife so that treatment of the affected areas can begin. Stay diligent, Texans!

Just a little sanctuary donkey enjoying the grass safari of West Texas. 😎 We have been incredibly lucky to have had amazing rains this spring. The sanctuary program through Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue puts rescue donkeys on private landowner pastures.
