I’ve found them to be really enjoyable—but also, foundational. These are the moorings I want my national partners to have when we’re thinking about community. I don’t want them to think of community because it makes us better or because of something sociological, but to see this as how God has made us. He made us to be in community. It’s right there in Genesis, and all throughout the Bible: God making His people to be lights for the people who aren’t yet part of that community. “Northeast Bible began supporting Meredith Block (first photo, middle right) when she first went to Peru as a missionary with ReachGlobal in 1994, and then both Carlos (second photo, second from right) and Meredith Block when they began working with the Yanesha people in Villa America, Peru, in 2012. For the last 10 years, NEBC has partnered with the Blocks to start the El Camino Project—a Christian technical school with a vision of raising up young adults who will lead their communities, form thriving families and serve as spiritual leaders—sending short-term mission teams six of those 10 years.

My first trip to Villa America was in 2017. It was a large team (20+), and my wife and youngest daughter joined me. The construction team then helped work on the first building in El Camino, and the ministry team served in the schools. My second and third trips to Peru were both this year (2025), helping with the construction of the caretaker’s house and the inauguration celebration, respectively.

NEBC’s relationship with ReachGlobal has benefited our church greatly by providing opportunities to support our missionaries in a very practical way and giving our members a fresh perspective on serving our brothers and sisters in other countries. Partnering with ReachGlobal has expanded our church’s vision of what the Kingdom of God is all about, giving members an opportunity to use their gifts and opening opportunities back home to share what God is doing around the world.”

"As a Bible college student, I got connected to Nova Community Church (EFCA). That was my first connection to a Free Church. My wife and I were thinking about going back to Japan to serve as missionaries full-time. One night, God showed up. I couldn’t sleep, and He clearly told me I was supposed to go to an unreached part of the world. Japan today is an unreached country—if you go by the Joshua Project’s 2 percent threshold—but I felt God leading us somewhere else. About a month later, I met an American missionary at a Biola missions conference who’d been serving in another unreached country. I learned there were way less believers there than in Japan. We prayed for about six months, and God opened the door. We joined EFCA ReachGlobal in 2001 to help plant churches there. Several years into ministry there, people were coming to Christ, but back in my own country, most people did not know the Lord or have eternal life. I started questioning, ‘What am I doing here?’ I prayed for God to open the door to Japan, but it wouldn’t open. Then, during a home assignment in 2010, the whole year shifted our hearts’ burden, everything converged, and God gave us a clear sense that now was the time to go to Japan. Every door flung open. In November 2011, we moved to Japan and decided to put prayer at the center of everything we do. As we were praying, it exposed us to the reality of Tokyo—its speed, its immensity, its density. Tokyo is the largest metropolis in the world—with 38 million people—and the cultural epicenter. That led to the birth of what we call the Tokyo Small Church Network. It’s a network of house churches that meet in homes of Tokyo. Tokyo is expensive to build a large church building, but there are a lot of small spaces, either homes or cafes or karaoke boxes, that can be filled with the life of Christ.” – Shige Nakazawa, EFCA ReachGlobal Tokyo City Team (Tokyo, Japan)
