Before Rihanna and A$AP Rocky or Cardi B and Offset, Ms. Melodie and KRS-One were called hip-hop’s first couple. 🖤

The Brooklyn rapper was a member of Boogie Down Productions alongside her husband. She released her solo album, Diva, in 1989, with KRS-One producing much of the record.

That same year, she appeared on “Self Destruction,” joining other artists in calling for an end to violence.

Their marriage ended in 1992. In July 2012, Melodie passed away at 43, leaving behind two sons.

After her passing, fellow Boogie Down Productions member D-Nice remembered a conversation they had shared just a month earlier.

The last thing she had said to him was:

“I’m proud of you.”
