In 1906 the Canal Louisiana Bank & Trust was built. General Allison Owen designed the architecture to communicate wealth, power, and permanence.

Later in the 1940s, the building became the world’s first World Trade Center and renamed to International House. This was decades before the World Trade Center Association network expanded internationally. It was envisioned as a place where people from different countries could meet and conduct business. Build relationships.

Eventually in 1998 the International House was purchased by New Orleans entrepreneur, Sean Cummings. There he would transform the building into what became known as New Orleans’ first boutique hotel. He worked with an architect Brooks Graham to create a building that encapsulates the feeling of New Orleans itself. Sophisticated. Sensual. Artistic.

The hotel has an art collection as a tribute to creative rebels. Two original Banksy murals. Bukowski. Basquiat.

All of this history goes to show an abundance of culture and its past. A tribute to New Orleans.

Today is the 21st anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

In 2008, three years after Hurricane Katrina, Banksy traveled to New Orleans, creating about 16 murals. He highlighted the slow recovery and clean up after Katrina.

During his visit he painted the infamous mural, “Looters” on a warehouse in the Elysian Fields area. The mural depicts two National Guard soldiers looting from New Orleans residents. They are shown lifting a television through a window and with a shopping cart already packed with stolen goods. In this mural he is criticizing authority, emphasizing how the government responding to Katrina. “Poking a finger in the eye of authority”. The mural can now be found inside of International House Hotel.

Another memorable mural from his New Orleans visit is “Nola (The Umbrella Girl)”, where a girl is pictured standing under an umbrella that shows rain falling from the inside. His mural conveyed how the very things that were created to protect us, can also hurt us.

Today we remember all the loved ones who were lost in this tragedy and the fight our city fought.

“With black and white, you can really see who they are.”

Black. White. Timeless. Finding the elegance in a colorless image, taking beauty out of the spotlight and into the shadows. He shot British Vogue’s iconic January 1990 cover. He had the ability to capture a person for who they are, unpolished and unafraid.

He published his first book “10 Women” in 1966. 10,000 copies sold at the time of its release. It featured a foreword Karl Lagerfeld, “Her face is perfect down to the last fraction of a millimeter”. He praised the raw black and white style.

He saw beauty in people. No edits.

He didn’t bend the truth. Divulging and sometimes distasteful, but fearless and assertive. He was Pure, Affectionate, and challenging.
His shadow, having walked through the fire, picked up the pen where his pain, blistered into beauty.
He acknowledged life as it was. As it should be. Unfiltered and untapped. He went all the way. Leaving the water running until the cheap w**e ran dry.

Tucked into the Bywater, Bacchanal is one of our favorite New Orleans haunts: a bottle of w**e pulled from the shop, a table in the courtyard, live music drifting through the trees, and nowhere particularly important to be next.
