Our engineering team keeps The James NoMad running smoothly, ensuring guests feel at home. Joe Ferrara, a cherished team member for 20 years, shares his journey, the challenges he’s overcome, and what makes working here special.

1. What inspired you to pursue a career in engineering, and how did you end up at The James NoMad?

I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands and get a real sense of accomplishment from completing a project. When I applied at the union hall, I wanted a long-term, stable position where I could grow and retire. At that point, I had a young family, so security was important. I interviewed at a few properties, but The James NoMad stood out. The team felt like a great fit, and looking back, I made the right choice—I’ve been here for 20 years.

2. Can you share a memorable challenge you’ve faced in your role and how you overcame it?

Early on, the department felt divided, which wasn’t productive. I had never worked in a place like that, and I knew it wasn’t healthy for the team or the building. At the time, I was the lowest in seniority, so I couldn’t do much—until I became a delegate. That role allowed me to make real changes and bring the team together. Eighteen years later, we’re one unit. We look out for each other like family. If someone needs help, another team member steps in. No one is left struggling—it’s always a team effort.

3. How does the engineering team contribute to an exceptional guest experience?

Our job is to make sure everything runs smoothly, from amenities to overall maintenance, but it’s also about how we interact with guests. When I’m making a repair, I don’t just fix the issue—I explain what I’m doing. If a guest is frustrated, I listen first and let them vent before reassuring them. That personal touch makes a big difference. By the time I leave, I try to make them smile. It’s rewarding when guests mention me in their feedback—that means I did my job right, not just as an engineer but as part of their experience at The James.

4. What advice would you give to someone joining an engineering team in hospitality?

Take pride in everything you do. Treat the hotel like your home—if something needs fixing, handle it. Don’t leave it for the next person, because we all rely on each other. Communication and teamwork are key. If someone can’t get to a task, another team member steps in. That’s how we keep things running seamlessly. Every job has challenges, but when you’re surrounded by a good team, work doesn’t feel like a burden. If you enjoy what you do and take ownership of your role, the day goes by quickly, and no problem ever feels too big to solve.

As part of our ongoing series celebrating the talented team at The James NoMad, managed by Highgate, we’re honored to feature Al, affectionately known as “the captain”. With over 45 years of experience in the hospitality industry, Al’s dedication and passion shine through in everything he does. Dive in to discover more about Al’s incredible journey and the wisdom he’s gained along the way.

When Al first walked through the doors of the hotel in 1992, he could never have imagined how much the building and its community would transform over the years. “I’ve seen a lot of changes,” he says, reflecting on more than 30 years of dedication. “I’ve witnessed numerous renovations and changes in management, and through it all, I’ve stayed passionate because of the people I’ve worked with and the work itself.”

Al’s journey in hospitality began at another hotel before joining the team here. “I had worked for another hotel for about 15 years before moving here.” His dedication to his craft is evident as he recalls a time when the hotel’s lobby looked completely different. “Back then, the lobby was huge, and the building was a different structure. The renovations over the years have made it what it is today, and I’m proud to have been part of it.”

Al has seen the hotel evolve, from its physical structure to the guests it serves. “The hotel’s look has changed, but so have the guests. We now serve guests from all over the world, with different expectations and needs. And as our guests have changed, so have we. It’s all about adapting and improving every day,” he says. “When I first came here, the area was not what it is today. It was a garage on one side, and the neighborhood wasn’t as welcoming. But over the years, everything has improved. The area has transformed, and the hotel is part of that transformation.”

As for advice to newcomers in the hospitality industry, Al has plenty to share. “Respect your job, your management, and your team. Do your best every day. You may only be working a shift, but every task, no matter how small, matters.”

When reflecting on what has kept him passionate all these years, Al offers simple wisdom: “I’ve been in this business for so long because I love what I do. I’ve always been passionate about my work. Every day, I do my job to the best of my ability, and that’s why I’ve been here for over 30 years.”

Al’s commitment to his craft and his team is what has made him an integral part of the hotel’s success. “It’s all about working together. Housekeeping, front desk, and all departments – we rely on each other to make this place run smoothly. And when it’s done right, it’s incredibly fulfilling.”

We are thrilled to launch a series highlighting exceptional members of our team. Managed by Highgate, our hotel is home to many inspiring individuals. Today we are proud to introduce Hassan, our Director of Security from our partners at Red Rock Security. His journey is a testament to dedication and passion. Read on to learn more about his story.

1. Can you tell us about your background and what led you to work at The James NoMad?

Hassan: In 2010, shortly after arriving in this country, I worked as a security guard at a residential building. Every day, I'd pass by this beautiful building, which was then The Carlton Hotel. I walked in to ask about job openings, only to discover that hiring was managed by an external company. I persisted, and in 2015, I finally secured a position there, marking the beginning of my journey. Over time, the hotel transitioned into The James Hotel, and in 2019, it came under the management of Highgate.

2. What do you enjoy most about your role at the hotel?

H: As the Director of Security, with 15 years in this profession, I find my job both fun and fulfilling. The best part is knowing that I help keep everyone safe without them even realizing it. I enjoy helping people and never say no; if I can't do something, I'll ask to be shown how. Working here has been particularly rewarding since Highgate and Mr. Eric, our General Manager, arrived in 2019. Their leadership has greatly contributed to my growth, involving me in meetings and pushing my limits in the best way possible. This has helped me learn and grow significantly.

3. Could you share a memorable experience you’ve had with a guest?

H: There have been many memorable experiences, but one that stands out involved a guest from the Middle East, whom I connected due to our shared religion. I helped her throughout her stay, from assisting with luggage to recommending a Halal spot for lunch. I was there for her every step of the way. On her last day, she wanted to tip me personally, and I'm not a tipped employee, so I felt a little shy and didn’t see her. She was able to get my email address and emailed me personally to thank me for my service and sent a generous tip. It wasn’t about the money; it was the fact that she remembered and made the effort to reach out after she left.

4. What do you appreciate the most about the culture and community at The James NoMad?

H: The straightforwardness of the management is something I admire. They are very supportive and take immediate action when needed. Although I work for an outsourced company, I am treated like family here. This sense of respect and cooperation is why I love working here. The management team, including Mr. Eric, Mr. Pradley, and Miss Aziza, has been incredibly helpful and encouraging, making it an honor to work alongside them. My role as Director of Operations for my company involves managing many people across the city, but this place remains my favorite because of the people and the respect I receive.

"The stunning 1904 Beaux-Arts building at 29th and Madison has been a hotel, under one name or another, for well over a century. But it’s hard to imagine it ever looked fresher than it does in its 21st-century incarnation as the James New York NoMad.

Of all the hotels added to the MICHELIN Guide selection in 2023, these were the ones you found the most intriguing.
