Main route: Prague-Tábor-Jindřichův Hradec-Slavonice-Mikulov-Vienna. This first Central European greenway - inspired by the Hudson River Valley Greenway in New York - is a network of trails stretching across nature preserves along the Vltava River in Southern Bohemia and the Dyje River in Southern Moravia. Highlights: UNESCO sites, medieval Český Krumlov, Rural Baroque houses; Renaissance towns of Telč and Slavonice, nature preserves and ponds in Třeboň, cross border National Park Podyjí/Thayatal, remnants of the Iron Curtain, Lednice-Valtice Park and Estate of the Liechtensteins, Jewish cemetery in Mikulov, the Tiree Chmelar Herb Garden in Valtice, wine region and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of the Pálava Hills and Lower Austria’s Weinviertel with picturesque wine cellar lanes, and Vienna. Several theme loops adjoin the main route such as the Rozmberk Herigate Greenway: Tabor-Ceske Budejovice- Cesky Krumlov- Trebon- Nove Hrady-Jindrichuv Hradec
Others are: the Greenway of the Naive Painter Josef Lada; the Peasant Baroque Greenway; the Greenway of the Renaissance Towns; the Greenway of the Vranov Region; the Liechtenstein Family Heritage Greenway; and the Dampfross & Drahtesel Rail Trail in Austria. Background: The Prague - Vienna Greenways project was conceived in 1992 by a Czech-American Lubomir Chmelar and his English wife Tiree. Since 1998, the project is managed by Nadace Partnerstvi (Czech Environmental Partnership Foundation) in Brno and its grant and assistance Greenways Program. The main Austrian partner is Future Base Weinviertel (fbw4). In 1995, the Chmelars have also created a nonprofit Friends of Czech Greenways based in New York City. Greenways Praha - Vídeň projekt založilo stejnojmenné sdružení občanů již v roce 1992 manžely Chmelařovými spolu s Radkem Neprašem, Věrou Filkukovou a Danielem Špičkou. Od roku 1998 projekt spravuje Nadace Partnerství v rámci svého grantového a asistenčního programu Greenways. Hlavním partnerem v Rakousku je Future Base Weinviertel (fbw4).
