Firebringer costume design look 1/16:
MOLAG the elder tribe leader
Played by the incredible Tyra Dixon Toepfer, I designed this look to be the most “put together” of all the designs, as Molag is described as the wisest member of the tribe. This look is fully lined (partially because the main fabric is a metallic brocade which is itchy on the skin!) and all the seams are finished, unlike some of the lower status characters in the tribe where I purposely left seams raw and ragged. Molag did what she had to as a leader of foragers, which is why her look is composed of plant materials, since she leads pre-fire discovery. Her look is also symmetrical, which I used as a signifier of characters who are more on the regimented side (vs free-spirited). Her crown does feature an asymmetrical design, because as you find out, not everything is what it seems with Molag. The actress had a special request for the shoulders and upper arms to have coverage, so I added leaf sleeves and fringe that matched the skirt, truly bringing the look to it’s fully realized creation. As a plus size woman myself, it is often not the case that costumers in local theater will treat us with the fitting priority we need to look and feel out best, so it was very important to me that Tyra have something she both looked and felt great in, and I think we succeeded!
