The Great Fire of May 1982. The devastating blaze broke out around 2:20 PM, tearing through nine village shops—including the beloved Village Food Market—along with and the Gulf gas station pictured. Thanks to the rapid action of firefighters from six local towns, the pumps were protected. What are your memories of this unforgettable in May?

Check out this amazing find from the Ogunquit Publicity Bureau from back in the mid-20th century!
This old-school guide shows just how much Ogunquit’s hospitality has evolved—and how much charm has stayed the same. Back then, visitors chose between classic Hotels and cozy Guest Houses, with many operating on "Am." (American Plan, including meals) or "E." (European Plan, lodging only).
Look closely at the names! Iconic spots like the Beachmere, Sparhawk Hall, and Aspinquid are right there on the list, alongside long-gone local favorites run by legendary town proprietors.

Did you know the story behind Ogunquit’s Dolphin Post?

Many know the mid-century Dolphin Post condominiums along the Marginal Way, but few know the history behind the name. Dating back to the 1700s, this maritime marker helped guide sailing schooners around the bends of the Ogunquit River and toward the town’s busy commercial wharves. Submerged at high tide, it reveals itself when the water recedes—a fascinating reminder of Ogunquit’s maritime past.

During World War II, an aircraft observation tower stood atop Pine Hill in Ogunquit, near the intersection of Pine Hill Road North and Pine Hill Road South. Civilian volunteers, including local spotter India Woodbury, took shifts watching the skies, using reference guides to identify aircraft, estimate their altitude, and track their direction by telephone. The station was part of a larger coastal defense network along the Maine shoreline, where local residents, volunteers, and lobstermen also kept watch for possible enemy activity offshore. Imagine

There’s something beautiful about York’s Nubble Lighthouse emerging through the fog, with autumn rose hips adding a splash of color in the foreground. Maine’s coastline has so many wonderful lighthouses, each with its own character and stories to tell.
