You might know naturalist, forager, cook, and educator Alexis Nikole Nelson by her social media presence, BlackForager. She has connected with millions of people through her playful, joyful, informative videos and conversations around botany and edible plants, and invites curiosity and new connections with our natural surroundings.
From Ohio, Nelson's approach to nature education includes uplifting African American and Indigenous food traditions, the history of foraging laws in the United States, and sustainable ways people can include wild plants into their diets.
In an interview on NPR, Nelson states “you see this very vibrant ecosystem that we are a part of. And there's something so fulfilling about it, right? You're just like, I pulled this out of the ground, and now it's sustaining me! So I look into natural spaces and I just see wonder.”
MNHC is celebrating Black History Month, highlighting African American naturalists. Please join us as we share inspiring naturalists all month long!
