The Farmashramonastery

The Farmashramonastery In 1999, Donnie Jennings purchased a cow pasture, built a barn and restored an old farmhouse. After 14 years, he was joined by his wife, Dena.

Together, they run a farm, ashram and monastery for retreats, camping and more to serve the community.

You might know naturalist, forager, cook, and educator Alexis Nikole Nelson by her social media presence, BlackForager. She has connected with millions of people through her playful, joyful, informative videos and conversations around botany and edible plants, and invites curiosity and new connections with our natural surroundings.

From Ohio, Nelson's approach to nature education includes uplifting African American and Indigenous food traditions, the history of foraging laws in the United States, and sustainable ways people can include wild plants into their diets.

In an interview on NPR, Nelson states “you see this very vibrant ecosystem that we are a part of. And there's something so fulfilling about it, right? You're just like, I pulled this out of the ground, and now it's sustaining me! So I look into natural spaces and I just see wonder.”

MNHC is celebrating Black History Month, highlighting African American naturalists. Please join us as we share inspiring naturalists all month long!

What if the “more” you’re chasing is actually inviting you to be still?

Each year on July 31st, the feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola, I revisit a word that’s shaped (and at times, strained) my journey: magis.

It’s often taught as a call to strive harder, give more, never settle. But what if that’s not what Ignatius meant at all?

In my latest Substack post, I gently “unbox” magis. What is its history? How has it been misused? What could be revealed if we look deeper?

As for me, magis is not meant to be a burden to carry… but as a path toward the more universal good.

Could more mean more presence instead of more pressure?
More compassion, not compulsion?

The 200’ diameter labyrinth, Camptown, barns, and Beaver Ponds as viewed from space. You can see the beaver dams have extended. Thank you Google Earth. Images are from Spring 2025.

The map was imagined by Donnie. I drew it to guide visitors (and to give me something fun to do.) 🦫
