First Saturday of the month, except for summer, Prairie Creek State park closes the road to cars. Bring your bicycle for a wonderful adventure through the Redwoods

After a glorious summer, Hike and Bike Day returns to Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park this Saturday (10/3)! By bike, by board, on foot, or even with a furry friend, come join us for a day of fun on the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway!

The Newton B. Drury scenic parkway in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park is closed to any motorized vehicles the first Saturday of the month for Hike and Bike Day. This special event runs October - May to give park visitors the opportunity to safely hike, bike, skate, and walk leashed pets along the ten-mile scenic drive through the redwoods!

Access to the Prairie Creek Visitor Center and Elk Prairie Campground will not be affected. To reach the visitor center and the campground, use the southern entrance of the Newton B. Drury scenic parkway (Exit 753). The parkway is expected to close Friday (10/2) evening for the event and reopen Sunday (10/4) morning.

While hiking through the redwood forests, you may notice huge logs lying on the ground that look like the perfect jungle gym. But they are far from a jungle gym!

Known as nurse logs, these decaying logs become a nutrient-dense spots for new plants to thrive. Since forest floors can be crowded, open places on a nurse log offer new opportunities to expand.

It is remarkable how much can grow on these logs too:
• mushrooms
• mosses
• ferns
• huckleberry bushes
• entire trees like western hemlocks and coast redwoods

and much more!

When left alone, these nurse logs thrive and become essential to the forest. However, these are fragile plants can be easily destroyed by human hands and feet, bringing decades to centuries of growth to a halt. Only a few people climbing on nurse logs can turn them into dead logs.

We highly recommend visiting Fern Canyon. Make sure to book your permit ahead of time. They fill up quick (a few permits available the day before)
