If you remember The Pence Springs Resort, you remember how it felt.

The sounds, the people, the way a day seemed to stretch a little longer there, leading into nights that were pure magic. We’re working to bring that feeling back.

Families and friends gathering again, just like they used to for a cousin’s wedding, Sunday brunch, prom or an anniversary dinner. Travelers coming to float the Greenbrier and spend some time in the beauty of Appalachia.

💭📸 If you’ve got a memory of Pence Springs, we’d love to hear it.

We can’t wait to see this story go live by Appalachian Memory Keepers!

The West Virginia Pence Springs Hotel used to rival the famous Greenbrier hotel in terms of luxury and popularity. I got a personal tour of the property today with my good friend Randy Burdette of Foxfire Realty and David Sibray, The West Virginia Explorer. Stay tuned for the video in a couple of weeks!

Appalachian Heritage Group is working to bring Pence Springs Resort back to life.

For generations, Pence Springs was a place people came to relax, gather, and enjoy both the natural mineral springs and surrounding areas. It’s a big part of Summers County’s history—and we believe it can be again.

Our plan is simple: restore the property as a boutique resort built for how people travel today—while preserving the character that has long connected it to the community and made it sought after destination for decades.

We’re currently looking for partners and investors who want to be part of the revitalization.

If you have memories, photos, or stories about Pence Springs, we’d love to see them—share them in the comments.

The Greenbrier River is just steps from the Pence Springs Resort.

Running for nearly 80 miles through some of the most scenic landscape in West Virginia, the Greenbrier River Trail is one of the longest and most celebrated rail trails in the eastern United States. Following the path of a former railroad line, it winds alongside the Greenbrier River through quiet towns, dense forest, and wide-open valleys—offering a rare combination of accessibility and immersion in nature.

Pence Springs sits just minutes from the trail, creating a natural connection between place and experience. Guests will be able to step off the property and into full-day outdoor activities and serve everyone from casual walkers and families looking to swim in the river to avid cyclists and rafters.

By the 1920s, the Pence Springs Hotel had become a full-scale destination resort. Days followed a gentle rhythm: prescribed visits to the springs, long walks through the grounds, afternoons of social gatherings, and evenings spent dining or attending events in the hotel’s ballroom.

Pence Springs functioned as a resort community. Golf, tennis, swimming, fishing, and organized entertainment filled the days, while the surrounding mountains offered a picturesque backdrop that guests traveled hundreds of miles to enjoy.

This advertisement captures a moment when Pence Springs stood confidently among America’s great resort destinations—quietly connected by rail, powered by its springs, and alive with the social energy of the 1920s.

Our aim is to let travelers once again feel that sense of pause, place, and quiet excitement that drew people here a century ago.

🥂If you have stories or memories of The Pence Springs past, we would love to hear from you.

Step back in time to the mid-1930s, when the grand Pence Springs Hotel found a new and noble purpose during the height of the Great Depression. After the "Roaring Twenties" era ended, the hotel was briefly converted into a finishing and preparatory school for young girls. Interestingly, local lore and historical records suggest that First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt had a hand in the school’s establishment as part of the era's focus on education and social improvement.

The students who walked these halls were young women seeking a high-quality preparatory education, often arriving from across the region to study under a dedicated faculty that included specialized teachers and even a school nurse.

Although the school only operated for a short time, it contributed to the growing history of the Pence Springs Hotel. After the finishing school closed, there were talks of creating a dude ranch, though this never came to fruition. In 1946, the state of West Virginia purchased the building and repurposed it as a state prison.

Travelers once arrived at Pence Springs by rail, stepping off steam locomotives along the C&O Railroad that carried guests into Southern West Virginia. The steady rhythm of passing trains helped connect this quiet valley to cities across the region and beyond, turning Pence Springs into a true destination.

The Pence Springs Resort was built around its natural mineral springs, long believed to support digestion, circulation, and overall wellness. Guests often stayed for weeks at a time, following prescribed routines of rest, social gatherings, and regular visits to the springs.

The reputation of the water extended far beyond the resort grounds through the Pence Springs Bottling Company. Mineral water from the springs was bottled and distributed nationally—and even internationally—earning recognition at major expositions and helping establish Pence Springs as a prominent destination.

The Pence Springs Resort was once a prominent destination where wellness travelers and social elites gathered, drawn by its mineral springs, formal dining, and entertainment during the Prohibition and casino era. Today, we are working to thoughtfully revitalize this historic landmark while preserving its role in the cultural and economic history of Southern West Virginia.

This page documents the ongoing work to bring new life to the Pence Springs Resort, from its early days as a mineral springs resort to the thoughtful planning underway today. This page is a public journal of the journey.

Here we’ll share:
• Historic photos and stories
• Insights into historic preservation and planning
• Stories from Summers County and the surrounding region, past and present

This page is for storytelling, education, and community engagement. All content is shared for general informational purposes only.
