In 1899, Bess Weber, an independent thinking woman, was drawn to Pophams fine white sand, plethora of wildlife, and unspoiled beauty. She bought a lot of land, right on the beach known as the Rivershore, and commissioned her father to build her an unassuming cottage. It was a simple two story home with a large stone fireplace in the living room and four bedrooms upstairs. There was minimal plumbing, no electricity, and a small kitchen - just perfect for her needs. She lived there during the summer months for many years. The storms of 1949 ravaged the Rivershore beach and many cottages were lost to the ocean. A rescue effort to pull the cottage back, and many neighboring ones, moved with the strength of oxen teams. They worked through the storm and successfully pulled the cottage back to safety. Beach conditions settled down and life went on. In 1956, Bess decided it was time for her to move into a retirement home in Bath. She sold the properties to Ed and Patricia Speare. The cottage has been in the Speare family ever since.
