Town Crier of Provincetown George Washington Ready, about 1916. 👀
Says here there’s been a Town Crier ‘for over 200 years’; the earliest name I have in writing is Ambrose Hill in 1854. The earlier Criers have been lost to history! 😞🔔📜

From the handwritten records of King Hiram's Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons: A piece of Provincetown's history.

"During one of the most severe winters, the harbor was in a deep freeze. Several trading ships were tied up to Union Wharf. Frozen in, they were unable to leave port.

One of the seamen, Dick Kelley, entered his name in Masonry. After his acceptance he was given his three degrees in 45 days, because if the ice cleared he would have to leave with his ship. He sent several years' dues to a merchant in Town and asked him to pay them for him. Meanwhile, he visited many Lodges throughout the world.

Many years later he returned to Provincetown to retire. He had been born aboard ship, and lived aboard ship all his life. When he retired here he purchased a small house on Commercial Street. On the front of his house he put up a sign, "A HOME AT LAST". After his retirement until the time of his death he was in perfect attendance."
