🐔 WHY AREN’T MORE PEOPLE RAISING MOTTLED JAVAS?!
If there is one heritage chicken that continues to impress us here at Secret Garden Farms, it’s the Mottled Java.
🔥 First—the HEAT.
Our summers are absolutely grueling, and while some breeds really struggle once the temperatures climb, our Mottled Javas just keep doing their thing. Give them shade, fresh water and normal summer care, and these birds handle the heat remarkably well.
Then winter rolls around and decides it wants to be spring on Monday, freezing by Wednesday, and warm again by Friday. 😂
❄️ The Javas handle that craziness too.
They are an incredibly hardy, adaptable breed that can thrive in both hot and cold climates. Even better, Java hens are known for continuing to lay well into the winter.
And these aren’t tiny chickens!
🐓 Roosters average around 9.5 lbs
🐔 Hens average around 7.5 lbs
🥚 Hens produce roughly 150–180 LARGE brown eggs per year
🌿 They are excellent foragers
🐣 Hens can go broody and make wonderful mothers
❤️ They are generally calm, friendly and easy to work with
🐔 They tend to get along well with other chickens
🌾 And while they tolerate confinement, they absolutely LOVE having room to range and hunt for food.
But here is the part that really matters…

This beautiful, practical homestead chicken is one of America's oldest breeds, yet today it is rare enough to be considered a conservation priority.
And that is crazy when you consider what this breed has given American poultry.
The Java helped contribute to the development of breeds including the Plymouth Rock, Jersey Giant and Rhode Island Red. It is literally part of the foundation of the American chicken breeds so many people raise today.
The Mottled Java might be our favorite variety—the gorgeous black feathers splashed with white mean no two birds look exactly alike. They’re big, useful, beautiful, hardy and full of personality.
