Many behavior problems in cats develop due to our failure to provide them with their behavioral needs. This presentation with Valarie Tynes, DVM, DACVB, DACAW, will review the social structure of the cat and why multi-cat households can be so stressful. Recognizing these signs of stress and how to a...

Reading to Cats is back! Come spend the morning reading to our adoptable feline friends. We're not sure who enjoys it most, the cats or the readers, but we do know it is a favorite activity around the shelter!

Reading sessions are half an hour, children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent and/or guardian. Bring your favorite book, your knitting, an e-book or other quiet activity and spend some quality time with the cats at the shelter. Sign up for your slot today! https://signup.com/go/eoccvNp

By now you’ve probably heard me say over and over that adopting two kittens is better than one (for lots of reasons). But what if you have an adult cat and want to adopt him/her a friend? While there are a few adult cats who do need to live in a single-cat household, the vast majority enjoy having a cat friend… BUT introduction is key! Take your time and read up on proper ways to introduce cats to each other (I have a chapter on this in my book, Total Cat Mojo). And in the meantime, check out my video on introductions: https://youtu.be/tsYT7yIOdqQ

And thank you to #teamcatmojo’s Patti Basker for sharing this sweet picture of two of her foster kittens (and thank you for fostering!).

UPDATE- Lcas found a family member. Prayers Thunder can pull through. 🙏🏼❤️

🚨⚠️🚨⚠️ “Loudoun, we need your help URGENTLY! Thunder the senior cat was found just now in critical condition, and he is struggling to survive, even while receiving veterinary care. He is microchipped to Shannon King of Hamilton, but we cannot get in touch with her. We need to find her ASAP to get her reunited with this kitty who has clearly been lost for a long time. Do you know Shannon? Please have her call us immediately at 571-233-1946.”

Luna is really enjoying her pets! 😻😋

Okay, okay! We know that today is really all about celebrating our beloved, non-human family members. But...one way to do that is by giving your pet some pets! Or if they don’t like to be touched, maybe give them a favorite treat, a new toy, or even just some slow blinks to let them know you care 💕🎉

I’ve known for a long time that the cat community has a problem with anti-Asian rhetoric. I’ve seen very hurtful & incorrect generalizations made about people I love. I’ve seen people make cruel jokes to friends that make them feel unwelcome. I’ve read sweeping generalizations of entire cultures when I travel internationally. Anti-Asian sentiment in the cat community is a real problem and is not new.

But yesterday, after I shared a lovely article featuring my talented and impactful friend Christina being brave and vulnerable, opening up about her experiences with anti-Asian bullying in the cat community, the responses I got on the article shook me to my core. And it isn’t because one or two people said something overtly racist. It’s because so, so many people said things that were completely and utterly dismissive, denying the pain of my friend, denying that any of this is a problem at all.

Why has it become so acceptable to outright dismiss the experiences of others?

When someone opens up to you about trauma, even if (and especially if) it is something you have not experienced, or will never experience, it’s an opportunity for you to listen. Listening is free. It is the least anyone can do. When we listen to others, we become a more connected and empathetic community, one that is welcoming and warm. In a community supposedly founded on principles of compassion for all, I find it really disturbing how quickly some people are prepared to shut down the voices of some, as if it benefits anyone to invest in the lie that racism doesn’t touch this community. It benefits no one. Not the cats, not the people.

If you don’t believe racism touches this community, that is probably because it doesn’t touch you. But just because it doesn’t touch you doesn’t mean it doesn’t touch people you care about (or ought to care about.) The only way to truly understand is to listen. So please, when someone is sharing their experience, just...listen.

Did you know that cuteness is actually an evolutionary adaptation in baby animals? Baby animals like kittens, puppies, and even human babies have evolved to possess certain features that trigger a caregiving response in adults. Our brains are hard-wired to want to nurture those who we perceive as “cute!”

The features associated with cuteness actually have a scientific name: kindchenschema. These qualities include a large head, round face, big eyes, and small mouth. When we see someone with these features, our orbitofrontal cortex activates within milliseconds, which we experience as a pleasurable emotion. Cuteness can totally hijack our attention and motivate us to turn our focus towards our nurturing instincts.

Mister Peep possesses the traits of the kindchenschema fully—so it’s no wonder he is so good at capturing my attention and getting whatever he wants from me. That’s just science!

We knew Frampton was special from the moment we first met him. He arrived at the shelter, curious, with his nose pressed to the front of his carrier. He leapt fearlessly into his kennel and greeted us with the cutest little meow. We were excited for Frampton to become available for adoption, we knew he would be a favorite and could not wait for him to find a home!

Unfortunately, we received some bad news after Frampton’s vet exam. He has both leukemia and lymphoma, and the test results do not look good. You would never guess that he is ill. He plays and pounces, gobbles up treats and rolls in catnip too! He loves people and desperately wants attention and love from anyone who walks by. Frampton might not have a long time left, but we know he deserves a loving home, for however long his life might be. Adopting a hospice pet might be heartbreaking but it gives you a chance to heal the heart of an animal at the time that they need you the most.

We know the holidays are almost here and people are busy. We know times are unusual, stressful and scary. But we also know that somewhere there is a perfect home for Frampton where he can live out his days surrounded by love and care.

Are you the holiday miracle Frampton needs? We are open for adoptions Tuesday - Sunday, 11:30-5pm.

Who is shooting cats? Loudoun, we need your help. Since April, we have had TEN cases of cats being shot, likely by several different individuals, many with pellet guns. Five of these cats were not able to survive their catastrophic injuries, including Sweetie, whose x-ray seen here, shows devastating injuries caused by a pellet gun prior to being humanely euthanized due to the severity of his condition. We have consulted with and utilized the services of the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office as well as a K9 officer with the Department of Wildlife Resources to find the perpetrators of these felonies and a $3000 reward is being offered to help solve these cases.

If your children have pellet guns, please talk to them about responsible gun usage. It is an act of animal cruelty to shoot a cat and a felony for anyone (even a minor) to inflict serious bodily injury to a cat, which was the case in all ten of these shootings. We know most kids love their pets, and may not realize that “target practice” on outdoor cats is legally and ethically different than organized hunting. All cats in the state of Virginia are considered companion animals, and the majority of these cats have been beloved family pets who have suffered from debilitating or life-ending injuries.

If you have seen or heard of anyone shooting cats, please call us (703-777-0406) - you may remain anonymous. Animal cruelty is frequently an escalating act, with strong statistical links to violent crimes against both children and adults. We need to find this person or people and keep our community safe. With most of these acts occurring in eastern Loudoun, where the population and residences are dense, every discharge of a firearm or pellet gun carries risk.

Our Humane Law Enforcement team is taking this investigation very seriously, but we need your help. We cannot continue to have cats dying slow, painful, preventable deaths. We are here to provide resources to those who struggle with concerns over free-roaming cats, but to needlessly inflict devastating injuries is not only heartbreaking and worrisome for our local families, it is also a felony, carrying potential jail time. Friends of Loudoun County Animal Services is now offering a $3,000 reward for tips leading to the arrest of the person responsible for one or more of these cat shootings. We can be reached at 703-777-0406 and messages can be left after hours.

This case is keeping us all up at night, and we will not rest until justice has been served for all these cats and their heartbroken families. Today, we ask for your help, in honor of Binx, Hope, Prissy, Chiron and Lillabet and in memory of: The Lovettsville three, Lacey and Sweetie. Please share on social media, talk to your families, talk to your friends and HOAs, and help us solve this case.
