The Square — Act with Integrity

The Square reminds us to “square our actions” by virtue and morality.

In daily life, that means:

* Being honest even when nobody is watching.
* Keeping your word.
* Treating people fairly.
* Making decisions you can be proud of later.

Ask yourself:

“Am I doing what is right, or only what is easy?”

As a husband, father, grandfather, friend, or Mason, the Square encourages you to live in a way that leaves no crooked corners in your character.

The Level — Treat Everyone as Equals

The Level teaches that all men meet on common ground.

In real life:

* Respect the janitor and the CEO equally.
* Listen to others before judging them.
* Remember that wealth, titles, and status do not determine a person’s worth.
* Recognize that life is temporary and our time is precious.

Ask yourself:

“Am I treating this person with the same respect I would want for myself?”

The Level also reminds us that every day is a gift, and none of us know how many remain.

The Plumb — Walk Uprightly

The Plumb teaches rectitude of conduct and uprightness.

In daily life:

* Stand up for what is right.
* Be dependable.
* Admit mistakes when you’re wrong.
* Have the courage to do the right thing even when it is unpopular.

Ask yourself:

“Am I walking a straight path, or am I compromising my principles?”

The Plumb is about having the moral backbone to remain upright when circumstances try to pull you off course.

Putting Them Together

A Mason can use all three jewels every day:

* Square your actions with honesty.
* Level your relationships with humility and respect.
* Plumb your character with courage and integrity.

A simple daily reflection might be:

“Did I act squarely with others today? Did I meet them on the level? Did I walk by the plumb?”

If you can answer “yes” to those three questions most days, you’re living the lessons of the jewels exactly as they were intended.

Every symbol carries a lesson, every tradition carries a purpose, and every journey begins with a single step toward knowledge and self-improvement.

The tools we carry are not merely objects—they remind us of discipline, honor, integrity, and the commitment to build a better version of ourselves each day. True greatness is not measured by what we possess, but by the character we develop and the lives we positively influence.

What value do you believe is most important in building a strong and honorable life—Integrity, Wisdom, Respect, or Brotherhood?

Tonight, the Brothers of Lou B. Winsor Masonic Lodge #363 were honored to perform a Masonic Funeral Service for Brother Nelson Van Leeuwen, a Mason of 70 years, at the request of his widow.

Though he was a member of Grand Haven Lodge #139, Brother Nelson relocated to the Reed City area many years ago and became a familiar and respected face throughout the local community. In a true display of Masonic brotherhood, the Worshipful Master of Grand Haven Lodge, along with several other Brothers, made the trip north to assist in honoring him and supporting his family.

Freemasonry teaches us that the ties of brotherhood extend far beyond the walls of our own lodges, and tonight was a meaningful reminder of that bond.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with his widow, family, friends, and all who knew and loved him.

“Soft and safe to thee, my Brother, be thy resting place.”

What We Tell the New Guys at Lou B Winsor Lodge

A comical Masonic poem

A new guy walks in nervous,
Just looking for a sign…
We smile and say, “Come join us,
You’ll only meet one night at a time.”

We tell him, “It’s real simple—
Just Brotherhood and light.”
We conveniently forget to mention
He’ll be gone most every night.

First it’s Lou B. Winsor Lodge,
Then somebody says, “Let’s roam!”
Now he’s driving out to Clam Lake
Like it’s a second home.

Hesperia’s got degree work,
Wabon says, “Come through!”
Mesick’s having fellowship,
And suddenly he’s going too.

The Past Masters tell long stories,
The Secretary reads things slow…
And every single “short meeting”
Lasts longer than they know.

Soon he owns lodge shirts and jackets,
Coins and pins and rings…
And starts explaining Masonic history
To random unsuspecting beings.

But somewhere down the road it hits him,
Driving home one night—
That all those laughs and handshakes
Actually made life brighter somehow.

And that’s the funny part about it…
Every Mason grins—
Because we all remember exactly
How the whole thing begins. 😄
