🎣 HOW TO FISH FOR FLOUNDER (AND WHY THE RULES MATTER)

Flounder aren’t random fish — they’re ambush predators, and once you understand how they feed, catching them becomes repeatable.

🧠 HOW FLOUNDER ACTUALLY FEED

Flounder don’t chase fast bait.

They:
• Lay buried in sand or mud
• Sit on edges (depth changes)
• Let bait come to them
• Grab first, reposition, then swallow

That behavior is why so many people miss bites.

📍 WHERE TO FIND FLOUNDER

Focus on transition zones, especially during moving water:

✔️ Drains and cuts
✔️ Drop-offs along shorelines
✔️ Channel edges
✔️ Jetty rocks (down-current side)
✔️ Creek mouths and marsh exits

If bait has to pass through it, a flounder is probably nearby.

🎣 BEST BAITS & RIGS

Flounder aren’t picky — but presentation matters.

Live bait:
• Finger mullet
• Mud minnows
• Small croaker (where legal)

Artificial:
• Paddle tails
• Curly tails
• Gulp-style baits

Rig tips:
• Jig head or Carolina rig
• Keep bait on bottom
• Move it slow
• When you feel a tap — WAIT a second before setting the hook

That pause matters more than people realize.

• Moving tides (incoming or outgoing)
• Slightly dirty water
• Cooler months = better bite
• Early morning & late afternoon

Texas flounder regulations exist for a reason — especially during spawning runs.

🚨 Seasonal closures and reduced limits are in place to protect spawning flounder, particularly during fall migrations when they’re most vulnerable.

That’s why:
• Certain months have no harvest
• Limits and methods are restricted
• Gigging rules change seasonally

These rules are set by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department based on population data — not opinions.
