SALT LAKE CITY, UT – The days are getting shorter and the nights are cooler, which means The Greatest Snow on Earth® is right around the corner. Utah’s resorts are gearing up for the upcoming winter with some of the most exciting local season pass deals and pass collaborations that the state has ever seen. However, with winter’s cold temperatures the need for warm jackets has never been greater for some of Utah’s population.

Ski Utah and the 14 Resorts are collecting clean, gently used coats and jackets as part of the first annual Suit up for Snow project. Coats of all sizes are welcome and will be distributed to The First Chair and The Road Home. The First Chair’s mission is to help children from low-income households access learn-to-ski or snowboard programs. The Road Home operates out of The Salt Lake Community Shelter and provides basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter, while connecting people with resources to help integrate them back into the community.

“Ski Utah and our resort partners are excited to give back to our local community, while continuing to raise awareness among locals and visitors about all of the exciting new pass options,” said Ski Utah President Nathan Rafferty. “Both First Chair and The Road Home are great organizations for Ski Utah to partner with and we look forward to collecting as many coats as possible through the Suit up for Snow project.”

Suit up for Snow will kick-off at the Bees Game on August 31. Donation boxes will be placed at the entry to the stadium, as well as season pass information for the 14 resorts and 5th and 6th Grade Passport information for Ski Utah. Anyone that donates a coat at the Bees Game will receive a free pair of Zagg headphones and be entered to win exciting prizes from Ski Utah.

The coat drive will run August 31 through November 1, with drop off locations at participating Resort ticket offices, Ski n’ See locations, the Rowmark Ski Swap and the Ski Utah Office. For the complete list of drop off locations go to http://www.skiutah.com/files/Snow_donation_location.pdf.

With the donation of a gently used coat donors can enter to win fabulous prizes including a Yeti Pass, Rossignol Skis, a Burton Snowboard and assorted merchandise from Smith, Dakine and Hot Chillys. Ski n’ See will offer a discount on a new jacket purchase if you donate a coat at one of their participating stores. The discount is $10 Off any Jacket $99-198, $20 Off any Jacket $199-$298 and $35 Off any Jacket over $299.

A complete list of drop-off locations for the Suit up for Snow Project can be found at http://www.skiutah.com/files/Snow_donation_location.pdf. For a complete list of season pass deals go to http://www.skiutah.com/winter/deals/deals/season_passes.

NEW! Resorts team up to offer combination passes.

Brighton and Solitude have a ski anytime interchangeable pass. And for Alta, Snowbird, Deer Valley and Park City Mountain Resort, buy a season pass at your favorite resort and ski up to three times at the others.

Be sure to ask about the fine print before you buy. Below is an edited version of the resorts' press releases. Think winter!

BRIGHTON RESORT AND SOLITUDE MOUNTAIN RESORT OFFER BIG COTTONWOOD SEASON PASS
(August 8, 2013) – New this year! Brighton Resort and Solitude Mountain Resort team up to introduce the Big Cottonwood Pass with access to over 3,700 acres of terrain, 130 plus trails and 15 lifts all in the “Heart of the Wasatch”. The scenic SolBright Trail connects the two resorts. For $999, this joint pass is valid at both resorts throughout the entire season with no blackout dates and includes night skiing at Brighton! These two great resorts combined to ensure the best of what Utah offers: powder, steeps, groomers, trees, parks, and pipes.

Alta Ski Area, Deer Valley Resort, Park City Mountain Resort and
Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort to Share Lift Privileges with Qualifying Season Passholders for 2013-14 Season

• Qualified Alta, Deer Valley, PCMR and Snowbird passholders enjoy three days of skiing or snowboarding at each of the other three resorts during 2013-14 winter season
• Requirements for ticket benefit eligibility are particular to reach resort
• Benefit will be honored seven days a week (some holiday blackout dates apply)

(August 1, 2013) – Alta Ski Area, Deer Valley Resort, Park City Mountain Resort and Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort announce that qualifying 2013-14 season passholders at any one resort will receive three free days of lift access at each of the other three mountains in 2013-14.
This lift ticket benefit will be honored seven days a week, including weekends, throughout the season – with holiday blackout dates applying December 21, 2013 – January 5, 2014 and February 15 – 17, 2014.

Eligibility requirements for ticket benefit are particular to reach resort, and supplies are limited-purchase early.

“As another step in adding value and variety for our Alta skiers, we think it is great to be able to add days of skiing at three of our fine neighboring resorts – Snowbird, Deer Valley and Park City Mountain Resort,” commented Alta Ski Area’s President and General Manager, Onno Wieringa.

“Deer Valley is so appreciative of the support from our season passholders year after year. This partnership will provide a great opportunity to thank our loyal guests and allow them more flexibility to experience the Greatest Snow on Earth®,” said Deer Valley Resort President and General Manager Bob Wheaton.

“This winter marks our 50th anniversary season, and I can’t think of a better gift to our qualifying season passholders than the opportunity to enjoy three of North America’s other iconic resorts – both right in their own backyard,” said Jenni Smith, President and General Manager of Park City Mountain Resort.

“Snowbird is proud to partner with three legendary Wasatch Mountain resorts to offer our qualifying season passholders an even better value with their pass purchases this coming winter,” said Snowbird President Bob Bonar. “With two new high speed chairlifts in two years, an increased focus on the guest experience, and this new, exciting partnership with Park City, Deer Valley and Alta Resorts, we are very excited about the coming winter in Little Cottonwood Canyon, and we hope you are too!”

Tour of Utah

08/06/2013

It's this weekend. The Tour of Utah. It's kinda' this country's version of Tour of France -- but it might be worse! Elite bicyclists, some just fresh from the Tour of France, will beat their bodies up again here in Utah with prime viewing time this weekend in the greater Salt Lake area. Just plop your lawn chair, your body and a cool drink in the shade along the route and watch the bicycle frenzy go by.

Below, I've copied and pasted the info from the Tour of Utah website, but you should check the site yourself for detailed maps, road closures and best places to watch.

We watched it last year and it was a hoot. Course workers nearby kept us posted as to where the mob was and when they would be passing. The excitement grew and grew.

First came a mighty cavalcade of equipment: Vans with 16 bikes lashed to the roof in case a rider's bike broke down. I guess they change bikes rather than change a flat tire. Whatever!

Next came the motorcycle escorts and the TV cameramen dangling off motorcycles. I hoped they wouldn't topple off and get run over by more motorcycles, late vans piled with bikes or the onslaught of riders themselves. Life as a camerman on a motorcycle is precarious. It's worth watching that preliminary show.

Finally came the riders. In a tight pack. Oh my gosh! If one should hit a rut and go down he would take out the entire herd of bikers. There was a massive woosh and a micro-burst of wind as they blurred past.

Then more vans of bikes, more motorcycles and some cops on motorcycles. The best part was the excitment of waiting while sitting in the cool shade sipping a cool drink. It was fast. And it was all free.

Go find a street corner and watch the Tour of Utah.

Stage 4 33.8 miles, 3550 Feet elevation gain, start
at 5:30 - 6:45 p.m.

Stage 4 reprises one of the most popular routes in Tour of
Utah history, the relatively short but very challenging Salt Lake City Circuit.
This year’s version has been shortened to 5 laps and will take place at 5:30 in
the evening instead of the heat of mid-day, giving race fans time to get home,
park themselves in a shady viewing spot, and spread out a picnic. From a start
in front of the Utah State Capitol the course skirts the mouth of City Creek
Canyon, a beautifully
unspoiled streamside ravine that is an oasis for city dwellers. Then it streaks
eastward along the top of the Avenues district, makes a sharp right and
descends Virginia Street,
briefly passing by Reservoir Park and the front gate of the University of Utah.
Fans in Reservoir Park will get a second look as the peloton does a flip-flop
and makes a hard left westward onto South Temple. This wide, leafy avenue is Salt Lake City’s
stateliest boulevard, home to its grandest old homes, including the Governor’s
Mansion. After a sharp right turn under the Eagle Gate in front of Brigham
Young’s house, riders will confront the 11 percent climb up East Capitol Street toward the front door
of the Capitol Building, and complete the circuit.
Stage 4 affords nearly limitless opportunities to enjoy the race along with
views of the downtown Salt Lake City skyline,
the University of Utah Campus, and the Wasatch Mountains
as the backdrop.

Stage 5 113 miles, 10,611 feet
elevation gain, 10:50 a.m. - 3:45 p.m.

For the fourth year in a row, Stage 5 of the Tour of
Utah (also known as the “Queen” stage) will cross five counties, climb more
than two miles and traverse a full 113 miles of the toughest, most breathtaking
cycling terrain anywhere in the world. Unlike the last three years, racers will
start at from Snowbasin Resort, site of the Downhill and Super G Events during
the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, and a member of the Sun
Valley family of resorts. From the Snowbasin start it’s all
downhill into Mountain Green, turning onto State Rd 66 and the rolling emerald
pastures and ranches that dot the Morgan
Valley, up and over an
imposing red rock escarpment to East Canyon Dam. After skirting East Canyon
reservoir the course veers onto State Rd. 65 and commences a short but very
steep climb over the Hogback Summit (the second of two Hogbacks the peloton
will cross this week!) before plunging into the town of Henefer. Then it’s a mad dash through the
rolling, pastoral, and utterly scenic Weber River ranching communities of Echo,
Coalville, Hoytsville, Wanship, and Peoa, followed by a long, gradual ascent of
Brown’s Canyon and down into Park City. With nearly two-thirds of the route
complete, but less than one-third of the climbing, the showdown for the true
climbers now begins. Riders first confront a steep, grueling ascent through the
heart of Park City,
up the 11 percent grade past the Ontario Mine into the sub-alpine–then
alpine–environment atop Guardsman’s Pass, finally crossing for the first time ever
into Big Cottonwood Canyon.
Following a 14-mile descent that passes Brighton and Solitude Ski Resorts,
numerous campgrounds, rushing rivers, crystal springs and countless mountain
cabins, the route breaks out into the south end of the Salt Lake Valley then
turns south up Wasatch Blvd for a couple of miles before entering Little
Cottonwood Canyon and the legendary final ascent to the finish in Snowbird Ski
and Summer Resort.

It's wildflower time in the mountains. View the show from the top of Alta's Albion Basin. You can drive all the way up the road (that's closed in winter). They don't bloom very long because they know winter is coming.

It's crossover season. Snowbird plans to be open through Memorial Day with $42 tickets if you have a season pass from another resort. But if you've hung up your winter gear, it's time to get fit. No, I don't mean that you should eat your veggies, I mean it's time to get measured and fit to a new bicycle.

I have new replacement knees so I decided I wanted a new bicycle to go with them. I'd heard of Mike Hanseen who's known as a bicycle fitting guru. It was time to do it right -- get fit first and then by the bicycle that could be set up to my body-specific measurements and geometry.

His fitting equipment is in the loft of his Millcreek Bicycles shop on Wasatch Blvd. It's not an actual bicycle, but a quick adjust skeleton that adjusted quickly to get me into the efficient riding position.

Then with my measurements he set up a women's bicycle so it would fit me perfectly. And it does. What a difference it makes! No body parts hurt and I have a lot more power on the pedals. Now it's fun to ride.

Throughout the summer, follow other stories on my Valley Journals column called "Let's Go!" (It's on the sidebar of each Journal). Ski you later!

As to the background. I write an online column about seniors for Ski Utah, the organization of all Utah ski areas. My story about George was such a hit that Ski Utah brought him from California and filmed him recently for 2 days at Alta.

And here's the link to my story:

Enjoy! And let's hope we can grow up like George.

Three resorts are open and starving for people: Brighton, Alta and Snowbird. the big news is the quality and quantity of the snow. At Alta, the pricing is a bit more complicated depending on whether you have a card or not. But skiing is a deal no matter how you slice it. It's open Friday, Saturday and Sundays only through April 28.

And Snowbird will be open through Memorial Day. Ski your legs off.

Clean the garage some other time. Ski now. Today, April 17, some of the trails were the best they've been all season.
