🐻 Bear Spray: Not Just for Bears

One of the most important things you can carry while exploring Montana is bear spray.

Despite the name, bear spray isn’t just useful for bears. It can be effective on charging moose and other aggressive wildlife as well.

We’ve had to use it on a moose before. It took about a can and a half, but it stopped the charge and gave everyone involved a chance to leave the situation safely.

Many people automatically think of carrying a firearm in bear country. While fi****ms certainly have their place, bear spray has a few advantages. It creates a large fog cloud between you and the animal, giving you a much larger margin for error than trying to place a precise shot while your brain is busy reminding you that a thousand-pound animal is headed your direction.

Bear spray is designed to temporarily incapacitate an animal’s eyes, nose, and respiratory system, allowing people to get away safely. The goal is not to kill wildlife. The goal is to stop an encounter from becoming a tragedy for either side.

Most visitors to Montana will never need bear spray.

That’s exactly how we like it.

But if you do need it, you’ll be glad it’s on your belt instead of sitting back in your vehicle.

🌲 Silver Run: More Than Just One Trail 🌲

One of the things we love about the Silver Run Trail System near Red Lodge is that you can make the hike your own.

The system consists of four interconnected loops that can be combined into roughly 5 miles of hiking, or shortened if you’re looking for something a little easier. Along the way you’ll cross rushing mountain streams, walk through beautiful pine forests, discover historic mining remnants, and enjoy incredible mountain scenery.

But Silver Run doesn’t stop there.

The trail system also connects to the Ingles Creek Trail as well as the Upper and Lower Basin Lakes Trails, giving hikers even more opportunities to explore the Beartooth Mountains. Whether you’re looking for a quick afternoon walk, a trail run, or a longer backcountry adventure, Silver Run can be the starting point.

It’s one of those places where every trail junction feels like an invitation to see what’s around the next corner.

Bring your hiking boots, bring your camera, and if you’re traveling with dogs, bring them too. They’ll probably have as much fun as you do.

🏔️ Staying at Kodow Kabin? Silver Run is just a short drive from the cabin and makes for an excellent day adventure.

Happy Father’s Day, Dad!

This photo holds a special memory for me. Dad was one of the very first visitors to Vicki’s Bunkhouse when it opened, and I was lucky enough to share that moment with him.

Over the years, he’s taught me the value of hard work, showing up when you’re needed, and never being afraid to tackle a challenge. Those lessons helped shape so much of what Kodow Kabin has become.

Today we’re celebrating all the dads, grandpas, stepdads, and father figures who make a difference in the lives of the people around them.

Happy Father’s Day, Dad. Love you.

❤️

Need a reset longer than a weekend?

Kodow Kabin offers monthly stays for people who are tired of noise, traffic, meetings that should’ve been emails, and sitting around a reclaimed wood conference table eating microgreens while a guy named Skyler says things like “let’s unpack that.”

Come spend a month where:
• the creek is real
• the stars are visible
• coffee tastes better on the porch
• nobody says “circle back”
• and you do not have to answer Slack messages from a guy named Skyler asking if you’ve “touched base on the deliverables.”

Built in 1865, Kodow Kabin is the kind of place that slows people down in the best possible way.

Perfect for:
• Remote workers needing quiet
• Writers and artists
• Extended Montana adventures
• People between homes
• Burned-out city people rediscovering oxygen

You’ll have:
• Fast Starlink internet
• Historic cabin charm
• Quiet fenced yard
• Creekside setting
• Easy access to Red Lodge and the Beartooth Pass

Stay long enough and your blood pressure may finally stop trying to file for divorce.

Monthly stays available.

🧺🐻 International Picnic Day at Kodow Kabin

Most picnic photos feature a blanket, a basket, and maybe a scenic mountain view.

At Kodow Kabin, sometimes the wildlife decides to make an appearance too.

This black bear stopped by near the cabin recently to check things out. He didn’t stay long, didn’t make a reservation, and thankfully didn’t leave a review.

One of the things we love most about Montana is that moments like this are still possible. Whether you’re enjoying a picnic by Rock Creek, exploring the Beartooths, or relaxing on the deck at the cabin, you’re surrounded by some of the wildest and most beautiful country in the Lower 48.

Just remember: if you’re having a picnic in bear country, keep food secured, clean up after yourself, and give wildlife plenty of space.

The mountains were here first. We’re just lucky enough to visit.

Sometimes you don’t need a week-long vacation.
Sometimes you just need one quiet night.

A night away from traffic.
A night away from notifications.
A night where the loudest thing you hear is the creek and maybe a confused bird arguing with itself at sunrise. Nature is deeply committed to unnecessary commentary.

At Kodow Kabin, we proudly offer one-night stays because not every Montana adventure lasts a week.

Maybe you’re:

* Driving the Beartooth Pass
* Passing through on a road trip
* Fishing the Clarks Fork
* Headed to the rodeo
* Escaping life for 24 glorious hours

We get it.

Most places want long stays only. We wanted Kodow Kabin to feel flexible, welcoming, and easy. A place where people can stop, breathe, and actually enjoy Montana without turning trip planning into a military campaign.

Built in 1865 and full of history, Kodow Kabin gives you:

* Quiet small-town setting
* Fast Starlink internet
* Creekside relaxation
* Cozy historic charm
* A fenced park-like yard
* Easy access to Red Lodge, Cooney Reservoir, and the Beartooth Pass

Whether you stay one night or one week, we want it to feel memorable.

Another 5-star review for Kodow Kabin. Tiny cabin. Big feelings. Humanity somehow survives another day.

“Loved this cabin and all that it offered. Super cute arrangement and the added bunkhouse is a great benefit…” and honestly that bunkhouse keeps quietly becoming the MVP of group stays. Especially for families, couples traveling together, or that one friend who snores like a diesel engine climbing Beartooth Pass.

Kodow Kabin was built in 1865, but thankfully now includes things people enjoy, like hot tubs and fast Starlink instead of dysentery and hauling water uphill with a mule named Earl.

We’re incredibly grateful for every guest who chooses our little historic cabin near Red Lodge. Reviews like this mean the world to us because we’ve put a ridiculous amount of work into preserving the character of this place while still making it comfortable enough that nobody has to churn butter to survive the weekend.

✨ Historic charm
🔥 Hot tub under Montana skies
🛏 Seasonal bunkhouse for extra space

Some of the best parts of Montana are the roads that don’t really seem to go anywhere.

Take a drive outside of Red Lodge and you’ll stumble across old homesteads, weathered barns, forgotten cabins, and pieces of history still sitting quietly out in the hills. Places that have seen brutal winters, cattle drives, hard years, and generations of ranch families.

This old homestead caught our eye on one of those backroad drives. No crowds. No traffic. Just big skies, rolling hills, and Montana doing what Montana does best.

When you stay at Kodow Kabin, don’t just stick to the highway. Grab a coffee, take the scenic route, and see what you can find out there.

The Clarks Fork River area off the Morrison Jeep Trail is one of those places that still feels rugged and untouched. Massive canyon walls, cold rushing water, hidden waterfalls, and enough rock scrambling to remind you that Montana does not care about your gym membership.

Bridal Veil Falls sits tucked back in the canyon like a secret. The hike isn’t polished or touristy. It’s rocky, uneven, and absolutely worth every step once you hear the falls echoing through the cliffs.

This is the kind of place that reminds people why they come to Montana in the first place. Not souvenir shops and traffic. Real wilderness. Real quiet. Real adventure.

If you’re staying at Kodow Kabin and looking for something beyond the usual roadside stops, the Clarks Fork area is an incredible day trip. Bring good boots, water, and a willingness to climb over rocks like a caffeinated mountain goat.
