If you're planning a camping trip, whether you're going in a tent or an RV, you want to think carefully about what you're packing, and that is doubly true for cooking equipment. No one wants to lug a bunch of different pots and pans all the way out to the destination, only to turn around and bring them back unused. So there's one cooking tool that we almost always bring with us when we're planning a back-to-nature vacation: a campfire-style Dutch oven. The reasons for this are simple. Yes, it's heavy (we wouldn't haul it if we were backpacking—this is strictly for car camping, RV camping, or glamping), but it's also incredibly versatile, incredibly tough, and is great at making food taste delicious. With the lid sealing in moisture and heat, a Dutch oven can sit over a fire and bake food similar to your home oven. But with the lid off, it also works admirably well as a cast-iron pan, searing meat and chicken with flair. Since it's basically just a big pot, it's also great for soups, chilis, and the like. And it works with almost any heat source, from your camp stove to an open fire.
