Outlaw Paper: Sandy Rodriguez’s "Resistance Map of Gulf of Mexico"
✍️ Written by Veronica Pesantes Vallejo
Veronica Pesantes Vallejo is a Miami-based, Ecuadorian-born curator, writer, and educator with thirty years of expertise in Latinx arts and culture. A University of Chicago doctoral scholar, she has managed programs at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, curated the first-ever Quito Design Week, and currently writes for "The Art Newspaper" and "ARTnews," among others.
📖 Chicana artist Sandy Rodriguez’s “Resistance Map of Gulf of Mexico” (2025) reimagines a contested region in the Americas, challenging the authority to name, map, and give meaning to a place. Created for her solo exhibition at The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, the work layers the colonial history of Florida, Indigenous notions of time, and contemporary contests over knowledge, history, and political power across the geography of the Gulf Coast, collapsing past and present into a single, urgent visual field. With wit, historical inquiry, and ancestral knowledge, she transforms the map into a tool of critical pedagogy, one that connects Florida’s colonial past to our fraught political present.
