Fifty years ago today — on November 10, 1975 — the Edmund Fitzgerald sank on Lake Superior, taking the lives of all 29 crew members about 17 miles north-northwest of Whitefish Point, Michigan.

To mark the 50th anniversary of the tragedy, the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society will host a public outdoor memorial service at Whitefish Point at 2:00 PM. More details can be found at shipwreckmuseum.com/edmund-fitzgerald.

Later in the evening, a private ceremony for family members will be held at 7:00 PM, and the public will be able to watch the livestream through a link posted on the museum’s website before the event.
