🌧️ Some of the best mornings in the Smoky Mountains aren't the sunny ones.

There’s something special about sitting on the porch with a hot cup of coffee, watching the clouds drift through the mountains, and listening to the gentle sound of rain falling on the metal roof.

No schedules. No crowds. Just mountain views, fresh air, and a chance to slow down for a while.

This is one of our favorite views from LeConte Nirvana. 🏔️☕

Would you spend a rainy morning here?

Rangers in Great Smoky Mountains National Park responded to multiple bear‑related incidents at Ramsey Cascades Trail this past weekend, including cases where a bear approached visitors, took backpacks, and briefly chased a group. Ramsey Prong Road and Ramsey Cascades Trail are now closed as rangers monitor bear activity.

Last weekend, rangers also handled several incidents involving an aggressive bear at Abrams Falls Trail. That area has now reopened after several days with no observed bear activity.

Spring means increased black bear activity in the Smokies. Mother bears are emerging with cubs and food sources are limited. This is a sensitive time for bears, and getting too close can lead to dangerous encounters.

To keep people and bears safe, please remember:
• Stay 50 yards away from bears—approaching bears is illegal.
• Don’t stop in the road to view bears; it creates hazards and delays emergency response.
• Secure all food and trash in a locked vehicle and never leave it unattended.
• Never feed bears. Feeding wildlife is illegal and can cause bears to become aggressive and lose their natural fear of humans.
• Stay alert on trails and consider carrying bear spray. Hike in groups when possible.
• Report bear encounters or unsafe behavior to park authorities at 865‑436‑1230.

Thank you for helping keep the Smokies safe for everyone—people and bears alike.

Starting July 1st, Tennessee law makes it illegal to intentionally feed black bears in certain areas, including around the Smoky Mountains. Violations can result in fines and may be charged as a misdemeanor.

As cute as moments like this may look, feeding bears (or leaving food and trash accessible) causes them to lose their natural fear of people — which can lead to dangerous encounters and, unfortunately, bears being euthanized.

If you’re visiting the area, please keep food secured and never approach or feed wildlife 🐻

We always share these tips with our guests to help keep everyone safe while enjoying the mountains.

Hidden History of the Smoky Mountains

The “Ghost Town” Railroad in the Mountains

Little River Railroad

In the early 1900s, one of the largest logging railroads in the Smokies ran deep into the mountains. The Little River Railroad hauled massive old-growth trees from the forests to sawmills in nearby towns.

At its peak, the railroad had over 150 miles of track winding through the mountains. Small logging camps popped up along the route, many of which disappeared once the timber was gone.
