Hi Craftonians!
What happens when you stop worrying about sticking to one medium and simply follow wherever your creativity wants to go?

In this episode of Joleen's Happy Time Craftcast, I'm chatting with Peoria, Illinois-based studio artist Hattie Lee Mendoza about mixed media art, repurposing materials, wearable art, beadwork, and creating work inspired by family, memories, and Cherokee heritage.

Hattie's creative practice doesn't fit neatly into one box—and that's exactly what makes it so much fun. She moves between painting, drawing, printmaking, fiber art, beadwork, and wearable art, allowing each medium to influence the next.

 In this episode, we explore:
 Working across multiple art mediums
Repurposing objects and materials in creative ways
Fiber art, beadwork, and wearable art
Balancing gallery work with art markets
Bringing family memories and meaningful objects into art
Connecting creativity with heritage and personal history

 Follow Hattie's work:
 Website: www.hattieleemendoza.com
 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hattieleemendoza/
 Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/

Hattie shares why she loves using what she already has on hand, how moving between different creative practices keeps her inspired, and why she doesn't believe you have to choose just one way to make art.

We also hear about a very relatable thrift-store victory turned thrift-store disaster involving an antique plate, a Goodwill bins treasure hunt, and a parking lot mishap. Thankfully, the story doesn't end there—the broken pieces are getting a second life as art!

At the heart of Hattie's work is a simple love of making. She creates the weird things she's thinking about, incorporates pieces of her history and family into her work, and then sends them out into the world to see what they mean to other people.

If you've ever looked around your home and thought, "I could probably make something out of that," this conversation is definitely for you.

Come make something weird with us!

With sparkle & big crafty love,
 Joleen

✨ A new episode is LIVE today! ✨

This week on Joleen’s Happy Time Craftcast, I’m hanging out with artist Hattie Lee Mendoza, and we’re talking about one of my favorite things: making art without putting yourself in a box. 🎨

Hattie works across painting, drawing, printmaking, fiber art, beadwork, and wearable art, often bringing in repurposed objects, family memories, and pieces of her Cherokee heritage.

Her creative philosophy is basically: make the thing you're excited about and see what happens! And I LOVE that. 💛

We also have a hilarious thrift-store mishap involving an antique plate that didn't quite survive the trip home—but thankfully, Hattie already has a plan for its second life. 😂

Hi Craftonians!

What happens when we slow down, listen closely, and simply let our hands make?

In this episode of Joleen's Happy Time Craftcast, I'm chatting with Wisconsin mixed media artist, writer, and teaching artist Emma Freeman about slow stitching, textile art, art journaling, and the incredible ways creativity can bring more joy, connection, and meaning into our lives.

Emma has been a professional artist for 20 years and a teaching artist for 10, and her creative practice is rooted in mindful, intentional making. She works with beautiful handmade textiles filled with stories, creating fabric meditation books, prayer flags, wearable art, and art journals from repurposed vintage books.

 In this episode, we explore:
Intuitive slow stitching and mindful making
Art journaling in vintage and repurposed books
The stories held within handmade textiles
Using creativity to connect, reflect, and explore
How making art can support our overall well-being
The joy of slowing down and paying attention

 Connect with Emma:
 Website: https://www.emmafreemanart.com/
 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emmafreemanartist/
 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/emmafreemanart/

Emma also shares her love of learning about the science of creativity and why making things with our hands can be such a powerful part of our lives.

We talk about finding beauty in the imperfect, listening to the materials we're working with, and allowing creativity to become a space for curiosity, connection, and self-discovery.

And, of course, Emma brings some wonderful playful energy to the conversation—including the adorable art classes she creates with her six-year-old niece and their very important mission to "Keep Magic Alive."

If you've been craving a slower, more thoughtful way to create, this conversation is a beautiful invitation to pause, pick up your needle and thread, and see where your imagination takes you.

Come slow down and create with us!

Listener Bonus: Use code HAPPYTIME for 20% off Emma's on-demand art classes.

With sparkle & big crafty love,
 Joleen
