How I Clean Arkansas Quartz Crystals
Every now and then, I’ll get a comment saying something like: “You must have bought that crystal and buried it, because crystals don’t come out of the ground looking polished and shaped like that.” ✦ But here’s the thing — they do. Crystals really are fully formed, perfectly shaped, and polished by the Earth itself. That’s why they’re so unbelievable and amazing.
Of course, not every crystal comes out sparkling. Most Arkansas quartz is caked in red clay or stained with iron, and it takes a little work to reveal what’s underneath. Occasionally, you’ll find a crystal that doesn’t need much cleaning at all — it’s already shiny and ready to show off. But most of the time, they need some TLC.
Here’s what I usually do:
✦ Spray off all the clay with water (I let them dry first so the mud flakes off easier).
✦ Give them an Iron Out bath — usually overnight, sometimes 24 hours.
✦ Neutralize with baking soda and water for about an hour.
✦ Rinse, rinse, rinse until there’s no trace of anything left but the crystal itself.
This works about 75% of the time — and every now and then, a stubborn crystal needs a little extra effort. But when you finally rinse one off and see it sparkle for the first time… that’s the best part.
✦ Question for you: Do you like your crystals raw and straight from the ground, or sparkling clean and ready for display?
Happy digging, friends. ✦ Catch you in next week’s Crystal Corner.
