Why stay cramped up in a tiny hotel room when you can rent a full house for about the same price?

Terlingua doesn't advertise this one.
The Music Bash is 31 years old, free, no tickets, and it runs on nothing but people showing up.

This is what we caught last year at the Boathouse and around town. Back this October with cameras rolling for the whole thing.

October 15 to 18, 2026. Silent auction proceeds go to the Mark "eYeBall" Kneeskern Memorial Art Scholarship, awarded to a graduating Big Bend senior heading into a fine arts degree.

There’s a reason people come to Big Bend National Park…
but this is where they stay when they’re ready to disappear from the noise.
This custom adobe home isn’t just a place to sleep, it’s a place to slow down.
Wake up to silence.
Drink your coffee on a shaded porch as the desert stretches endlessly in front of you.
Spend your day exploring the wild beauty of Terlingua Ranch or chasing horizons inside Big Bend…
then come back to stillness, a fire under the stars, and a sky so clear it doesn’t feel real.
Inside, thick adobe walls keep everything cool, calm, and grounded.
Outside, the hammock sways, birds pass quietly, and time loosens its grip.
Here, you remember what it feels like to just… be.
• Private desert solitude on expansive acreage
• 30 minutes to Big Bend National Park
• Dog friendly escape for you and your adventure companion
• Sleeps 4 comfortably with two queen beds
Come for the views.
Stay for the silence.
Leave feeling like yourself again.

The fight is far from over. The threat to the Big Bend i growing.

Growing opposition is emerging to plans for new border barrier construction in and around Big Bend National Park after the Department of Homeland Security waived 28 environmental and historic preservation laws to speed up the project.

Conservation groups, local landowners and former National Park Service officials have expanded an ongoing federal lawsuit, arguing that one of America’s most unique and fragile landscapes is being put at risk.

Critics point to the unprecedented decision to waive protections including the Endangered Species Act and other environmental safeguards. They also question whether massive new infrastructure is necessary in a region that accounts for a small fraction of overall border apprehensions.

The controversy intensified after reports that billions of dollars in border infrastructure contracts had been awarded and plans surfaced for large worker camps in the remote Big Bend region. A bipartisan effort in Congress to block funding for barriers inside the national park failed earlier this year.

Opponents say the project threatens wildlife migration corridors, scenic vistas and the tourism economy that many rural West Texas communities depend on. Supporters argue additional infrastructure is needed to strengthen border security and give federal agents greater operational control in remote areas.

With legal challenges growing and public pressure mounting, the fight over whether a border wall belongs in Big Bend appears far from over.

The most powerful rebuke of the administration’s unnecessary and unjustifiably expensive Big Bend border wall comes from the region’s own border sheriffs.

“The area includes nationally and internationally significant public lands, ranchlands, tourism-based economies, and critical wildlife habitat," they wrote in a joint statement today, March 9. "Major permanent infrastructure, accompanied by lighting systems, access roads, and maintenance corridors would permanently alter one of the most remote and ecologically significant border landscapes in the United States.”

They urged “federal and state policymakers to consult directly with local law enforcement leadership and regional stakeholders before advancing permanent infrastructure projects in the Big Bend area.”

The latter is an especially interesting remark, for the simple reason that public-land management under this second Trump administration—spearheaded by oil executive and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum—claims to be all about local input and local interests.

For some reason, fascinatingly, that doesn’t seem to apply to southern Texas, historically one of the reddest and most conservative states in the nation.

Do you think federal overreach in rural Texas without even listening to local input will play well in the November midterms?

Do you think rural Texan voters will forgive the federal government for forcibly altering their way of life, destroying their livelihoods, and decimating their economies—all of which are rooted deeply, sometimes literally, in the life-giving water of the Rio Grande?

By now, you have likely seen various news stories and social media posts about a 30’ steel bollard wall being planned beside the Rio Grande in Texas’ iconic Big Bend region. The Rio Grande defines the Big Bend. Hell, the region is literally named after the “big bend” of the Rio Grande. Without the Rio Grande, there is NO BIG BEND. The “big bend” of the border wall would be a place to avoid and mourn, not to adventure and dream.
