Dolly gave all of us in the mountains a masterclass in hospitality. She understood that true hospitality isn’t about perfection. It’s about making every single person feel seen, welcomed, and loved like family the moment they walk through the door. She showed the world what Appalachian grace looks like, and never forgot the soil she grew from or the butterflies she chased.

Please welcome Tagatha Christie, Dancing Bear’s newest team member.

Thanks to her expansive writing history, she has taken over responding to our online reviews. She’s thoughtful, professional, and always eager to address guest concerns—preferably face-to-face in the woods.

Tagatha is a female elk, also known as a cow, although we strongly recommend that you not call her that while critiquing your stay. She may weigh up to 600 pounds, and despite repeated meetings with Human Resources, she remains protected on property (and the Smoky Mountains).

What makes Appalachian music sound Appalachian?

The answer is more layered than a single instrument, song, or tradition—and Sean McCollough is joining us at Appalachian Homecoming to help us listen a little closer.

Sean is a Teaching Professor of Musicology at the University of Tennessee, specializing in American music with an emphasis on the music of Appalachia. He directs the UT Appalachian String Band, hosts Kidstuff and the Saturday Blue Plate Special on WDVX, and performs on guitar, clawhammer banjo, mandolin, and piano.

During his Building Blocks of Appalachian Music session, Sean will explore the many musical styles that have traveled through these mountains across generations—and how they came together to create what we now recognize as Appalachian music.

This won’t be just a lecture. Through conversation, stories, and live musical examples, Sean will bring each influence to life and show how Appalachian music has continued to evolve while remaining deeply connected to place, people, and tradition.

Join us Saturday, August 1, as we explore the sounds that have helped shape Appalachia.
