Joshua Tree, CA

Many have found endless inspiration in this place. It's difficult to put the feeling into words, but maybe it's the surprise of it all. And though it's so silent, we hear so much more. On the darkest of nights, the sky is truly visible. This place with so much to offer in turn makes us crave less, and here

we find unshakeable happiness in the simplest of things. If we take time out to enjoy the sound of a bird's wings flying above, or the intensely starry sky, how can that be taken away? These are experiences we want to share. So, we found and fell in love with a 1949 house, and a 1958 casita, and redesigned each space with a 'slow' pace in mind. Our hope is that you enjoy every part of your stay, from making your local coffee by drip in the morning, choosing the perfect record to put on as the sun sets, or by relaxing in a hammock to watch the sun shift across the room.

Rich grew up hearing stories from his parents’ and grandparents’ innkeeping days in Connecticut. Thirty-two years later and 2,500 miles away, we opened one of our own. A different place, a different era, but the same lessons.

Sharing this as another chapter of our story as keepers with , a brand that’s been helping people care for their spaces for over 140 years—and just made it even easier with their new reusable silicone lids. A small detail that makes a big difference.

This full moon was exactly that 🌝

Also, you’re gonna want to go to .yv and listen to some while you’re at it. Watching friends thrive is the best—proud over here!

We’ve been feeling sentimental lately. Rich comes from a family of innkeepers—and somehow, without quite planning it, we became innkeepers too. He never met his grandfather, who ran a family inn in CT, but the longer we do this work, the more we find him in it.

So much of innkeeping is maintenance. Done well, no one notices. They just feel that everything is right.

This is the first chapter of a story we’re telling about keeping a place with . More soon. đŸ€

When things feel big and heavy we try to think small. The bloom that changed from yellow to peach today, planting a new seed in our veggie garden. The one tile we laid, the one person we made smile. That hug. 🧡

fountain progress! đŸŒ”â›Č after the earth building workshop we did with our pal last year, we’ve been wanting to experiment more with rammed earth. we’d also been dreaming of a fountain for our courtyard at home, so we combined the two: a rammed earth exterior with a interior. it’s getting close!!

swipe to go back in time through the process of making it.

Let’s talk about the least romantic part of running a place you love: the paperwork. The “grownup” stuff. The underwriter who has one more question, every day, for a month. We’re going solar (still), and it has been anything but simple.

We thought this year would look different. More notebooks, and fewer loan documents. But this is what building something looks like. Worth it? Yes. Easy? Not so much.

We’ve been navigating this and a few other things behind the scenes lately. More soon—we always tell you eventually.đŸŒ” (photo of the Prickly Pear Casita at , which will be 100% solar soon along with the rest of the inn and all Joshua Tree properties in the coming months!!)

Though we’re never fully “off,” we’ve been practicing something that feels almost rebellious in small business life: presence.

Parenting alongside building this world has shifted the rhythm. Less constant sharing. More living first, documenting later. The past month was quieter here
but full behind the scenes. And we have so much to share soon.

For now, a few frames from Hawaii celebrating my mom’s birthday, and a few from returning home to the desert. đŸŒșđŸŒ”

🌕 The full moon in Hawaii (always finding the moon wherever we go)

🌊 Adventures to green and black sand beaches, skin that forgot what humidity feels like

🌋 An active volcano reminding us that the earth is not static

🐱 Forever ingrained in our memories: swimming with manta rays and sea turtles (not pictured)

✹ We’re back in the desert now—the Joshua trees are blooming and cacti continue to grow out of rocks

We love you, desert.

It’s been really fun seeing everyone’s 2016 recaps, and wanted to share ours too. đŸ„° (it was a big one!!)
