Well , the road looked ok on the map!😎😮! I’ve always said that “there is no such thing as a bad turnaround”, and this one is a bit more than the Ranger can handle… also probably not the best route to try solo. 33 miles to Courtwright Reservoir and there was blasting involved in making this “road”. Think we will settle in to a fine campsite with a view! 🐕😎⛰️

Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill,
From a 2018 Southern Africa journey - Namibia and Pretoria, South Africa. This was the last time I was able to visit our friend Habe Roode. He has now passed, but his memory remains.

Native to the dry savannas and woodlands of southern Africa, this species is well known for foraging primarily on the ground and is often referred to colloquially as the “flying banana” due to its striking bill.

The Namib - Day’s End
In memory of our dearest friend - Habe Roode from South Africa. He made a huge difference in our lives, and for so many in Africa with his work and accomplishments in agriculture. Habe was brilliant, dedicated, and driven. We miss him and will be forever grateful for having known him and having had him as a friend.

This camel thorn acacia has been standing silently for over 600 years - a tribute to the dry, harsh lands of the Namib Desert.

It’s been a bit since I posted - so today’s archive dive took me back to my first trip to Namibia in 2016 and a run up the dunes to get into the Dead Vlei before the full moon set.

Meerkat Moment,
Haven’t posted in a bit - so I opened up Lightroom, closed my eyes, scrolled and clicked on a random photo. I ended up at the Santa Barbara Zoo way back in 2017. We scored a great day with overcast skies and super colors. Fun Stuff!

A pair of Slender-tailed Meerkats in a typical meerkat pose in their Santa Barbara Zoo enclosure. These little guys used to be little known, but thanks to nature shows like The Meerkat Diaries, they have become well loved. They live throughout south eastern Africa: Namibia, Botswana, and Angola; and chirrup, trill, growl, or bark, depending on the circumstances.
