Spring break in the mountains hits different when you're not fighting beach traffic.

If you're staying in Waynesville this month, here's how we'd start the morning.

Panacea Coffee first. Depot Street, easy parking, and they actually know what they're doing with espresso. Get there before 9 on a weekend if you want a seat.

The Buttered Biscuit is the move if the group wants a proper Southern breakfast. Biscuits, eggs, home fries. It's a local institution and it fills up fast on weekends. Worth the short drive from downtown.

Joey's Pancake House is out toward Maggie Valley on Soco Road. Pancakes, stacks, the whole deal. Over 500 reviews and basically all five stars. Go hungry.

All three are within 15 minutes of Mojo Manor. You're not searching for breakfast, you're choosing between good options. That's a different problem to have.

Rain or shine, Soco Falls never misses.

This hidden double waterfall is about 20 minutes from Mojo Manor, tucked just off US-19 on the way toward Cherokee. We send basically every guest here, and almost all of them come back saying they had no idea it existed.

Here's the deal: it's a 0.5-mile walk from the parking pull-off to a viewing platform that gives you a perfect look at both falls dropping side by side. No serious hiking gear needed. Kids can do it, grandparents can do it, and it's still genuinely impressive once you get there.

The falls are roughly 40-50 feet tall and split into two separate streams before they drop. In spring when snowmelt is running off the mountains, the volume is intense. Summer visits are cooler and shadier than you'd expect.

Quick tips from us:
- Go on a weekday morning if you can. The parking area fills fast on summer weekends.
- No fee and no permit needed.
- Pair it with a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway on your way back.

Soco Falls doesn't show up on most top waterfalls in NC lists. That's kind of the point.

Ski season's winding down at Cataloochee - but there's still time to make it happen.
