Snake #2 up for debate! It's our beloved Queen snake (Regina septemvittata). The Queen snake is an elusive, semi-aquatic snake, often hanging out on branches over creeks and rivers. It will usually just plop into the water when danger approaches. Queens are very docile but will wiggle a bit and musk if handled. Also, their diet consist almost exclusively of freshly molted crayfish. Or is it crawdads, crawfish, crawdaddy, mudbug? Is this the next debate? 😄

Okay, let's settle the debate. This is the Northern Watersnake (nerodia sipedon sipedon), the ONLY nerodia genus found in Oconee County. If you said Common WS (nerodia sipedon), you'd be correct too as the NWS is 1 of 4 sub-species of the Common WS; NWS & Midlands WS are the only species of Common WS found in SC. They are semi-aquatic and non-venomous although, if they can't flee, they become defensive. While a bite from a NWS may make you scream and 💩 your swimsuit, they are harmless to humans. They will pretty much eat whatever else lives in the water (even other NWS) but fish are their favorite! And sorry, but nobody cares what your Daddy's 2nd cousin's sister-in-law's old DNR buddy says....there are no Cottonmouths in Oconee County!

Y'all know what season it is....snake season! As temperatures rise, all of Chau Ram's reptiles become active: lizards, turtles and snakes! But for some reason, our snakes can get a bad rap. They're the ones we hear the most comments about. Just remember, they live here, you don't! County Ordinance protects our wildlife and ecosystem, so the best thing to do is walk (or swim) away. Pictured below are 2 different species of our most favorite snakes! Bonus points if you can ID them! Stay cool! 😎

UPDATE: Park is back open! Sorry for the inconvenience!

CLOSED: Chau Ram will be closed, Thursday, June 11! Westminster City utilities will be repairing a water line break on the entrance road into the park. We will update when we re-open! Please call 864-647-9286 with any questions.
