We are just over a week away from a fun filled day. Here are the details. The Backwoods Rough Rider ATV Club will be leaving from Linneus. Departure time and location and all details to be posted on the club page. The destination is Witt’s End Wilderness on Deering Lake. We will be serving lunch from 11-1. Lunch will be by donation. We are inviting riders from all area clubs and the lake region to join us. If you would like to come from away, you are welcome to park and unload here at our place and ride local. If you think you may come, please send us a rough headcount in your riding party so that we can plan food appropriately. We would like to have a rough number by August 16th as we will be doing a Sam’s Club run. Proceeds from the ride go towards 3 disabled Veteran Moose hunts this fall. Let’s see those ATVs and SXS flying the American flag.

Learn from your own mistakes. I have spent a lot of time hunting, fishing, and camping in the North Maine Woods. I have never run a MURS radio in my trucks. I knew I really should be. A year ago I almost ate a loaded 18 wheeler. 100% my own fault. I promised myself before I started taking Veterans back in I would get one installed to make traveling those roads a bit safer. I reached out to Dow Enterprise in Fort Kent. Patrick Dow immediately jumped on board and told me to bring my truck to him. He hooked us up with a top of the line MURS. He did an incredible job on the install. He is very particular about his work and that can be hard to find. It’s easy to see why he is the best in the business. If you spend any time in the woods give Dow Enterprises a call. Don’t make the same mistake I did and run those roads with no radio. It will bite you eventually

Thankful for a lot of different things this week. The bear baits are becoming very active with some great looking bears. We received another unexpected and huge donation to close the gap on funding the 3 Veteran moose hunts. Michael Lynch fully sponsored a hunt for us. Mike is a neighbor here at the lake. He has supported our cause multiple times when we have been fundraising to keep the wheels turning on things. It’s definitely shaping up to be a great hunting season ahead. All I can say is chase your dreams and sometimes things will just fall into place

Things are very busy right now. Days are consumed by running bear bait. Afternoons are filled by working on details for the upcoming ATV club ride and BBQ, and of course the 3 Veteran moose hunts this fall. This week we received a very unexpected and thrilling surprise. Home Health Care Specialists of Southern ME and NH paired up with Points North Home Inspection to fully sponsor one of the Disabled Veteran Moose hunts!!! This is HUGE and an incredible gesture. This immediately eases our worries about covering costs. A big thank you this morning to my Deering Lake neighbors Laura Costello and Corey Costello for you sponsorship. 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸

I have always been a military history fan. I have read a lot of books over the years. The last few weeks I have been thinking of ways to fundraise to help cover the costs of taking 3 disabled Veterans on moose hunts this year. Last year a neighbor at the lake, Michael Lynch, sponsored Jessica Lynch to come to Maine on a moose hunt. I asked a huge favor of Mike a couple weeks back and asked if he might be able to have Jessica sign her book for us. He was able to pull it off and put it in our hands today. For those of you that follow military history her story is incredible. We will put some thought into how best use this signed piece of history to further our mission

Christmas Day has arrived. We were up and out the door early this morning to get all our bear sites baited. I am tired and my arms are sore from lugging bait and grease but it will all be worth it when we see our Veterans have the chance at a Maine Black Bear. Thank you Jon LeClair and Lynn for all the help today. It made the day go a lot quicker

This weekend coming up will be busy with bear baiting season kicking off. So I wanted to make sure to do our monthly Sponsor Spotlight a little early. This is a 2 month spotlight. This morning I want to talk about Kim and Norm. Where to start is a hard one. I have known them for a long time. Norm and Kim came on an ice fishing trip a couple years ago and we had a great time. They became huge advisors and supporters ever since then. They have given us a lot of very good advice and pep talks. They have given us gifts and donations to keep us moving forward. They were the driving force for us finally getting the side by side for Witt’s End Wilderness. They have done all this while running and managing their own nonprofit. Kim and Norm have now stepped up and sponsored the August and September payment of the side by side. One less thing for us to worry about so that we can focus on making bear season successful for all of our hunters. Today I will raise a cold one for them looking out over the lake and think about how lucky we are for their support. This is a prime example of Veterans helping Veterans 🇺🇸

We are in the middle of our busiest year yet. Everything is just clicking and great things are happening. We wanted to make a push this year to add some much needed gear and infrastructure to Witt’s End Wilderness. The County Federal Credit Union said “we got you.” They funded us for a brand new stove and refrigerator for the Veteran camp where all the wonderful meals are prepared for our guests. Next came an armload of canoe paddles for our paddling trips. Finally was an armful of fuel cans for all the backwoods trips we take Veterans on. Donations like this are very impactful for a small nonprofit and allow us to keep serving our nations finest. We are very grateful for The County Federal Credit Union believing in us and supporting us.
