The Kootenai is running high but don't let that discourage you. Water conditions are good and the river is fishing well.
Spring hatches are firing: baetis, March browns, and caddis coming off each afternoon, usually around 2:00 pm depending on the stretch. Don't expect the window to last long. When the day starts to cool around 5:00 pm it slams shut. But while it's open, give a rising fish a good drift and they'll eat.
Nymphing remains your most consistent producer throughout the day.
Look for fish in soft runs with five-plus feet of water, off current areas, and around cover. Skip the riffles, trout are lethargic in cold water and won't move far to feed. Indicator set five to six feet from the top fly, one or two BB split shot. A coffee colored Pat's stonefly with a perdigon is always a good bet this time of year.
If streamers are calling you, fish it slow. Thump and pulse like a wounded minnow. Get a pull? Stop it, let it sink, then pulse again. Not as consistent as nymphing but this is when bigger fish are bulking up. Stick with it. You'll get a nice one.
✅️ One important note: the Kootenai is closed to fishing from Libby Dam to the Fisher River bridge until June 1.
⚾️ As for my Red Sox, giving me fits right now. Dead last in the American League East and ownership pulled the trigger on manager Alex Cora last Saturday. Red Sox Nation went sideways. Some agreed, some were aghast, Cora is the third winningest manager in Sox history. Either way, we beat Baltimore two games in a row right after. I'm staying positive. It's still early. Go Sox.
