Always worth a visit. Park at Daymer Bay.

For three centuries, the 12th-century St Enodoc Church in Cornwall lay almost entirely buried beneath the shifting sand dunes of Daymer Bay.

The accumulation was so great that the building was nicknamed "Sinking Neddy," and by the 19th century, the only way inside was through a hole in the roof.

To ensure the building remained a sacred site, a clergyman had to be lowered through a skylight once a year to perform a service on behalf of the parish.

The church was finally unearthed and restored in 1863, revealing its distinctive crooked spire which had survived the crushing weight of the dunes.

Today, the historic site is surrounded by the lush greens of a golf course, though the sands of Brea Hill remain a reminder of its long disappearance.

The churchyard is also the final resting place of the celebrated poet Sir John Betjeman, who immortalised the "blesséd" St Enodoc in his famous verses.
