It was today, 50 years ago (May 3, 1975) that Kings Dominion officially made its debut! Yogi's Cave, Scooby- Doo, Rebel Yell, The Sky Ride, Shenandoah Lumber Company and Eiffel Tower were some of the first attractions. Kings Dominion was the second most expensive park to be built, behind Disney World at the time. On opening day, the line to get in started at the park's gates and was wrapped around Route 1 by 5 a.m. Kings Dominion opened their gates around 9 a.m, to roughly around 60,000 guests, and there was another 50,0000 waiting to get in.

Traffic was backed up on I-95, 10 miles to the north and south, along with route 1. The park ended up letting all those remaining guests in for free. They were told, "it was going to be the most miserable day of your life. It's so crowded, you won't be able to do anything.” Kings Dominion was the first park to close before it was fully opened, as it had to shut down at some point opening day due to the overwhelming capacity. So many amazing memories have come and gone over these five decades such as King Kobra, Smurf Mountain, Hanna-Barbara Land, Apple Turnover, Volcano, Anaconda, Days of Thunder, and Racing River just to name a handful. The park has also been through Taft, KECO, and Paramount's management. Through all the good and bad, we're so grateful to celebrate 50 years! ❤️
