Shapes on the beach. Looking forward to spending more time down here over the summer. Guests from France, Denmark, and Germany have booked so far, so we’ll fit in around those visits.

Always chopping.🪓
“Every man looks at his wood-pile with a kind of affection. I love to have mine before my window, and the more chips the better to remind me of my pleasing work. I had an old axe which nobody claimed, with which by spells in winter days, on the sunny side of the house, I played about the stumps which I had got out of my bean-field. As my driver prophesied when I was plowing, they warmed me twice, once while I was splitting them, and again when they were on the fire, so that no fuel could give out more heat.”

Henry David Thoreau, Walden.

Outside and inside. Always on the lookout for something in Red. 🌲🔥🌊

We’ve been masquerading as ‘The Danish Winterhouse’ for the last few days. Last month, we installed a new wood burner in the house. It’s a Morsø 1442, which uses a unique combustion system to deliver convection heat with much-improved air quality output. We’re glad to report that it’s delivering on its promises. We’ve saved the old Morsø 1b and have plans for that… 🌲🔥🌊

Creative guests from Australia via the UK. Left the house super clean, left us creative gifts but most importantly left us a bag of Haribo wine gums. It doesn’t get any better than that.

Just got a booking from France. Seems this year we have global reach.🌍🌲🔥🌊

Finally managed to put up the bird boxes we’ve been repairing. Let’s see if we get some tenants. Might be too late in the season, but keeping fingers crossed for some avian action! 🪶🪺🐦‍⬛

Coffee break. Beautiful Danish spring day today. Doing some general tidying up, discovering some interesting burrowing under the deck, spotting spring flowers, and removing pine cones from the gutters. Always working. Thankful for the opportunity to be here on a day like this . 🌲🔥🌊

Squirrel ate my boots! We’ve been clearing the shed and getting the house ready for guests. Went to fetch my trusty duck boots, bought in New Jersey over 20 years ago.

I thought they felt a bit heavy. Discovered one of our woodland friends has not only enjoyed snacking on the interior but also that they are ideal storage receptacles for acorns.

If you would like to visit and help track down the culprit, just let us know. 🐿️ 🌲🔥🌊

Today, Denmark has a new king. H.M. Queen Margrethe II abdicates and leaves the throne to her son, HRH Crown Prince Frederik. It’s a big day for Denmark. 🇩🇰

The Royal family’s hunting lodge at Trend Skov is just across the road from the summerhouse. It’s hidden deep in the woods and provides an escape from a busy public life. The lodge has been the royal family’s private residence since the time of Christian X. It’s a simple, low, angular log house built by Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid with funds they received as a public gift on the occasion of their wedding on 24 May 1935.

They purchased the hunting lodge and part of the 431-hectare forest. It’s just a few kilometres from Bjørnsholm Bay, on the Limfjord, from where the Trend River winds into the North Jutland countryside. Frederik IX often used the house in connection with hunting and as a refuge for the family during the holidays.

If you visit us at the summerhouse, you might see a royal deer wandering through our woods or, if you are lucky, a royal family member on the way to the beach at Trend. 👑🌲🔥🌊

Always love adding new books to the bookshelf. This summer there’s a new inside plus a couple of paperbacks from (not for the vegetarians who follow us). Weather has been all over the place this week but today it is outstanding. 🌲🔥🌊
