What is a solar flare? : A flare is an eruption of energy from the sun that generally lasts minutes to hours,” the SWPC explains. They are classified based on their strengths, according to NASA, using a scale ranging from B-class on the lowest end to C-class, M-class, and finally, X-class. Each letter represents a ten-fold increase in energy output, and there is a scale of 1 to 9 in each class, except for X-class. X-class flares can exceed 9, with the largest-ever recorded being an X45 that occurred in 2003.
What can it affect? Electronics, radio frequencies, cause the aurora borealis to be seen as low as Northern California.
A basic list of things to have in case of emergencies: a flashlight, water for a week or so, food that doesn't necessarily need to be heated, medical supplies, blankets/ emergency blankets if you are in a cold area, extra batteries, back up your important computer files onto an external hard drive, get a full tank of gas for your car, have a hundred or two hundred of cash in small bills, etc. There are lots of things that one could have on an emergency supply list, but this is just a basic list for the average city dweller.
