One thing that really surprised me when I first moved to Longreach was discovering the town common.
The Longreach region has a huge common that wraps around the town – you can use it for grazing and for fun things like driving down to the river. When we first moved, I took Josh out along a dirt track and just turned off towards the water… he was shocked that you’re actually allowed to do that out here 😂
People often worry there’s “nothing to do” in the outback, but it’s all about making your own fun – and that’s exactly what everyone does here. We’re hanging out for the in August; the first time we went fishing here we caught four! And don’t even get me started on how good the red claw is.
These horses in the photos were on the town common a few years ago when I lived out here originally. They’re there on what’s called agistment (the city girl in me had no idea what that meant at first 🤭). Basically, it’s when a landholder (in this case, the council) lets someone else graze their cattle/horses on their land.
For locals, this is totally normal. But for me, being able to pull over on the side of the road and stand this close to horses, on open country, felt wild and so far from anything I grew up with.
