NEW ARRIVALS: This past weekend we introduced an additional 10 blue wildebeest onto the reserve. Notice the dark stripes running down their flanks? Every blue wildebeest has a unique pattern of dark stripes, much like a human fingerprint.

These wildebeest came as a generous donation by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife to the Emcakwini, KwaNgono and Esibongweni Community Trusts and forms part of the ongoing conservation and community partnership initiatives at Babanango Game Reserve.

Wildlife introductions are a part of the broader ongoing rewilding and conservation efforts on the reserve, and serve to strengthen the biodiversity of the area.

Keep an eye out for them this winter as they settle into their new home.

The beauty of game viewing, and the reward of patience!

This white rhino mother served as a reminder for us that even the most familiar silhouettes in the bush can hold unexpected detail.

There is always more than what first meets the eye - subtle connections, quiet continuities, and life unfolding just beyond what is immediately visible.

Be patient and expect the unexpected on your next game drive - you never know what 'little' surprises might reveal themselves...

As the seasons begin to shift across Babanango Game Reserve, the landscape takes on a new character.

The lush greens of summer slowly give way to warm golds, rust-coloured grasses and crisp, clear mornings. Cooler temperatures settle over the reserve, bringing with them excellent game viewing as vegetation thins and wildlife gather around rivers, in valleys and open grasslands.

The landscape is starting to glow with the fiery bloom of aloes - our striking winter flowers that set the hills alight in reds and oranges.

As they open, they become more than just a visual spectacle - they’re also a seasonal feast. Vervet monkeys dart between the stems, sampling the nectar-rich flowers (while making a mess of it!) while sunbirds and other nectar-feeders arrive in flashes of colour, drawn in by the promise of food.

It’s a small but beautiful reminder of how everything here is connected - the timing of the blooms, the movement of wildlife, and the shift of the reserve into its early winter season.

Last week we successfully introduced 76 blesbok onto the reserve! Blesbok is a species of antelope endemic to southern Africa and are easily recognised by the distinctive white blaze running down its face - the feature that inspired its name (“bles” meaning blaze in Afrikaans). Their rich chestnut coats and pale underbellies become especially striking in winter light, making them one of the more photogenic antelope species you'll be able to spot out on a game drive.

Blesbok were once hunted to near extinction in the 19th century, but through conservation efforts and protected areas, populations recovered remarkably - making them one of South Africa’s conservation success stories.

Animal introductions are a regular conservation management practice undertaken to strengthen the existing gene pool and supplement populations, particularly those that may have been impacted by increasing predator numbers. To date, the reserve has introduced over 4000 animals, with plans to introduce at least another 800 before the end of the year.

Stay tuned as we continue to grow our wildlife populations and strengthen the ecological integrity of the reserve through ongoing conservation and management initiatives.

Happy World Bee Day from Babanango Game Reserve 🐝 Bees play an important role on the reserve, and have even been put to work protecting certain trees!

In January 2023, then-guide Graham Adams founded the Bees on Babanango Project - a pioneering venture that intertwines bees, elephants, and trees into a harmonious conservation melody. It all began with a simple idea: to use bees to deter elephants from overfeeding on certain trees, particularly the marula and cussonia trees, as they are naturally averse to our buzzing friends.

In just a year and a half since joining forces with the Babanango Reserve Management in 2024, Graham has expanded the initial 15 hives to 20. This expansion signifies more than just growth in numbers; it’s a testament to the dedication to enhancing biodiversity, supporting African honeybee populations, and fostering ecosystem recovery.

By blending nature’s elements in innovative ways, Graham and Babanango Game Reserve are redefining elephant conservation while celebrating the interconnectedness of our wild world.
