{History} Few places capture South Africa’s rich history quite like Welgelegen Manor.
Built in 1912 by renowned industrialist Andries Mostert, the manor was designed by architect Sir Herbert Baker as a tribute to the original Mostert family home, Welgelegen in Rondebosch, Cape Town. Mostert’s vision was inspired by his family and their determination to rebuild after the devastating effects of the phylloxera vine disease that forced the sale of their ancestral estate.
Set on the Rietbult Estate between Balfour and Nigel, the manor became a symbol of perseverance and a deep appreciation for heritage. More than a century later, its grand architecture, elegant interiors and timeless charm continue to tell the story of a bygone era.
Today, Welgelegen Manor remains a place where history, luxury and South African hospitality come together, allowing our guests to experience a living piece of the country’s past.
