Well worth a visit when you’re in Bloem 🌳

With balmy summer days ahead, a visit to the Free State National Botanical Garden is an ideal destination for a great day out. The botanical garden was founded on the 22 nd February 1969 when the then State President, Jim Fouche officially opened the gardens marking the occasion by planting an African Wild Olive tree which can be seen till this day.

The garden has much to offer, for the energetic there are two wonderful walks approximately 2 kilometres long which offers diverse habitats and great views. For those who wish to do some bird watching the hide situated next to the man-made dam is ideal.

Over 140 bird species can be seen in the gardens, while it hosts a remarkable 32 mammal and 54 reptile species. If you are feeling a bit lazy then spreading a picnic blanket under a shady tree is the perfect way to relax.

Of great interest is the water wise garden where you will discover an array of indigenous plants which can be used to create a beautiful garden using the minimal amount of precious water.

Guided tours for school and other interest groups can be arranged but prior arrangements must be
made.

The garden is open from Monday to Sunday from 08h00 until 17h00.
Free State National Botanical Gardens can be found at the end of Rayton Road, off Dan Pienaar drive.
