Background
Kampala Art Auction Limited is a registered private company established in 2015 to manage creative productions, art exhibitions and art auctions in Uganda. Kampala Art Auction was founded on the realized need that Uganda has an acute shortage of curators and art managers to work and develop alongside artists. Curators play a pivotal role in supporting and archiving the diverse cultural heritages of any nation. Kampala Art Auction aims to spearhead, manage and nurture the processes and platforms of thought and practice that will achieve this. At Kampala Art Auction we are committed to archiving and documenting important art for contemporary times and engaging broad audiences that transcend ethnic, geopolitical, and socioeconomic boundaries.

In August 2015, Kampala Art Auction organized the Kamu-Kamu fundraising art auction at the prestigious Kampala Serena Hotel. This was the first ever major modern and contemporary art auction in the history of Uganda. On display were over 77 artworks by 48 prominent artists from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, the D R Congo, Ethiopia and Nigeria. The two-day event highlighted the growing profile of Ugandan art and artists in the region, and fostered a deeper appreciation of the inherent value of art to Ugandan society and its cultures.

Since then, Kampala Art Auction has co-managed multiple art exhibitions including โ€œTogether We Canโ€ November 2015 by Helen Nabukenya (Uganda), โ€œCast a Light on Prejudiceโ€ December 2015 by Papa Shabani (Uganda), "Eroticism and Intimacy: Faces, Places and Paths" March 2016 (Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, DRC,) "Heart of Darkness" May 2015 by Christian Tundula (RDC), Rap Hip Hop 2016, by Kayiwa Matthew, and Zikunta: Gale of Humans 2016 by Wasswa August Donald.

Uganda Visual Art Scene
The profile of contemporary art in Uganda and the Great Lakes region has grown by leaps and bounds over the past two decades. It can now comfortably stand shoulder to shoulder with works from some of the continents best known art hubs like Western and South Africa. This year's auction will provide the platform to highlight the growing profile of the region's and Uganda's art scene. It will also expose and trigger a deeper appreciation of the inherent value of art to society as an investment alternative.

Art in and of itself is history. It is a rich and useful archive of the life and times of a people and their culture, frozen in spaces and times that eloquently tell the story of their existence. In essence, art reveals the cultural ethos, heritage, socio-economic and political realities of the time and place in which it is created and exists. In this regard, the Kampala Art Auction will provide multiple opportunities to document, broaden and supplement the existing art archives in Uganda by ordering them and easing their accessibility. It will also serve to continue and further the exploration of dynamic displays and presentation of art works in places that enhance their value, in addition to providing new levels of exposure and critique of these very artworks.

The Kampala Art Auction is not an end in its self. It will provide several spin-off benefits to primary and secondary stakeholders, both in the short and long terms. As mentioned in the objectives, since the event has become a permanent fixture on the Kampala social calendar capable of attracting a global audience of artists, art collectors and art enthusiasts, the countryโ€™s service industry will be given a necessary boost as a direct result. Hotels, restaurants, entertainment spots, courier and travel services, etc, all stand to reap from this premier event now and in the years to come.

Art Auction 2016
The Kampala Art auction has now evolved to become an annual event and the 2016 edition is planned to take place on 14th October 2016 at the Kampala Serena Hotel. Guests outside Kampala and Uganda can bid online at http://www.kampalaartauction.com/auctions/. This year, a portion of the proceeds from the auction will be used to start a trust that will shore up continuing education for visual art managers and curators in Uganda. This initiative will pool funds to aid the development of the arts by facilitating the exchange of knowledge within and between art institutions and by training aspiring art managers through further studies.

At this year's edition of the Kampala Art Auction, invited guests, art collectors and lovers of art will bid to have the chance to own any of the 55 contemporary and modern artworks from the Great Lakes region. One day prior to the auction itself, there will be a preview of the lots on sale at the Kampala Serena Hotel.
The 2016 Kampala Art auction has been made possible, thanks to the generous support of RTS Autoview Inc., SBT Uganda and Under Ground Contemporary Art.

Objectives of the Kampala Art Auction 2016:
1. To showcase the works of prominent and emerging artists to the general public in Uganda and beyond
2. Set up a trust to support art education for visual art managers and curators in Uganda
3. To encourage Ugandans to invest in art as an alternative to stocks and bonds, precious metals, real estate, etc
